Technical Dossier
The ProSoft Technology MVI56E-MNET is a Modbus TCP/IP network interface module designed for the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix backplane platform. It is deployed across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical refineries, offshore oil and gas platforms, nuclear power auxiliary systems, water treatment facilities, and continuous-process manufacturing plants. The module bridges ControlLogix PLCs to Modbus TCP/IP networks, enabling integration with third-party field devices, SCADA systems, and legacy instrumentation that communicate via the Modbus protocol over Ethernet. Its enhanced (E-series) architecture supports up to 5,000 registers of data exchange per port and provides diagnostics accessible directly through the ControlLogix controller tags, reducing commissioning time in complex multi-vendor environments.
ProSoft Technology introduced the MVI56 platform to address the growing need for protocol bridging within the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix ecosystem. The original MVI56-MNET established the baseline architecture: a single-slot ControlLogix module with dual Ethernet ports executing Modbus TCP/IP master and slave functions simultaneously. Data was exchanged with the controller via the ControlLogix backplane using a block-transfer mechanism, with configuration managed through ProSoft's PCB (ProSoft Configuration Builder) software.
The transition to the enhanced E-series — represented by the MVI56E-MNET — introduced several architectural improvements: expanded internal data memory (up to 5,000 input and 5,000 output registers), support for the ProSoft Diagnostics Web Server accessible via standard browser without additional software, and compatibility with ControlLogix firmware revisions through v30+. The E-series also introduced CIPconnect passthrough, allowing configuration and diagnostics over the ControlLogix backplane Ethernet bridge without a direct Ethernet connection to the module itself.
As the ControlLogix platform itself evolved from the original 1756 chassis to the current GuardLogix and ControlLogix 5580 controllers, the MVI56E-MNET maintained backward compatibility across chassis generations. For installations migrating to the newer CompactLogix or Logix 5000 architecture, ProSoft offers the MVI46-MNET (SLC 500 platform) and PLX51-MBTCP (standalone DIN-rail gateway) as migration paths. The MVI56E-MNET is currently in the mature/sustained phase of its product lifecycle; ProSoft continues to provide firmware updates and technical support, but the module's core architecture is not expected to receive major revisions. Long-term maintenance sourcing is therefore a primary concern for end users with installed base units.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for ProSoft Technology MVI56 and MVI56E series modules, with particular focus on units that have reached end-of-standard-availability through distribution channels. For facilities operating ControlLogix systems with installed MVI56-MNET (non-E-series) units, direct replacement with new stock is no longer straightforward; DriveKNMS sources tested surplus and refurbished units to support these installations without requiring a full system retrofit.
Our sourcing process covers: factory-surplus units from decommissioned plant assets, tested-good pull units from system integrators, and new-old-stock (NOS) units from closed distributor inventories. Each unit is cross-referenced against the original ProSoft part number and firmware revision before listing. For customers requiring a specific firmware version for compatibility with an existing ControlLogix project file, version-matched units can be requested. Emergency same-day quotation is available for critical plant maintenance situations.
ProSoft MVI56E-MNET modules present specific test requirements due to their dual-port Ethernet architecture and backplane communication dependency. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all units processed through our facility:
Backplane communication verification: Each module is seated in a live ControlLogix chassis and block-transfer read/write operations are confirmed via RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 controller tags. Backplane current draw is measured and compared against ProSoft's published specification (typically 800 mA at 5 VDC).
Ethernet port functional test: Both RJ-45 ports are tested for link establishment, Modbus TCP/IP master polling, and slave response using a dedicated test bench running a Modbus TCP simulator. Port isolation is verified to confirm no cross-port data leakage.
Web diagnostics interface check: The integrated web server is accessed via browser to confirm the diagnostics page loads correctly and displays accurate port statistics — a key indicator of internal processor health.
Configuration retention test: A standard MNET configuration is written to the module via PCB software and power-cycled three times to confirm non-volatile memory retention.
Visual and mechanical inspection: Backplane connector pins, front-panel LEDs, and chassis locking tabs are inspected for wear, corrosion, or physical damage prior to shipment.
