Technical Dossier
The ICS Triplex TC-205 series represents a core hardware platform within the Trusted™ Safety System architecture, deployed extensively across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, offshore oil & gas platforms, nuclear power generation facilities, and LNG processing plants. Engineered to IEC 61508 SIL 3 requirements, the TC-205 chassis and associated module family provides the physical and electrical backbone for fault-tolerant, triple-modular redundant (TMR) control architectures. Installed base spans facilities operated by major energy companies across the North Sea, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific regions, with many systems now in the 15–25 year operational lifecycle range, creating sustained demand for genuine replacement and spare parts.
The TC-205 platform was introduced as part of ICS Triplex's second-generation Trusted controller hardware, succeeding the earlier T8000 series chassis designs. The TC-205 chassis introduced a standardized 19-inch rack-mount form factor with a passive backplane bus architecture, enabling hot-swap module replacement without process interruption — a critical requirement for SIL 3 safety instrumented systems (SIS). Early revisions (Rev A/B) supported up to 8 I/O module slots with a dedicated power module bay; later revisions (Rev C onward) extended backplane addressing to support expanded I/O counts and introduced enhanced EMC shielding conforming to EN 61000-4 series standards. The TC-205 chassis communicates with Trusted controller modules via a proprietary high-speed serial backplane bus, which is not compatible with the later T8100 or T8200 series backplane protocols — a key compatibility constraint for system integrators managing mixed-generation Trusted installations. Power cabling within the TC-205 family, including the TC-205-02-8M5 chassis power cable, uses a defined pin-out and cable length specification (8.5 m nominal) to maintain voltage drop within the chassis power budget. Replacement cables must match the original specification precisely to avoid undervoltage faults on redundant power modules.

The TC-205 series has entered the mature-to-end-of-life phase of its product lifecycle. ICS Triplex (now part of Rockwell Automation's safety portfolio) has progressively discontinued active manufacturing of TC-205 chassis hardware and associated cabling assemblies, including the TC-205-02-8M5 power cable. For operators of existing TC-205-based Trusted Safety Systems, the primary sourcing strategy is the secondary market for tested, genuine surplus stock. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of TC-205 chassis components, power cables, and associated modules sourced from decommissioned systems, factory overstock, and authorized distributor liquidations. All units are catalogued by revision level and manufacturing date code to ensure compatibility with the target chassis revision. For facilities requiring long-term maintenance agreements covering TC-205 hardware, DriveKNMS provides multi-year supply contracts with reserved stock allocation, ensuring continuity of spare parts availability beyond the OEM's active support window.
TC-205 chassis components and backplane cabling undergo a defined incoming inspection and functional test protocol at DriveKNMS before dispatch. Chassis power cables (including TC-205-02-8M5) are tested for continuity, insulation resistance (minimum 100 MΩ at 500 VDC), and connector pin-out verification against the ICS Triplex wiring specification. Backplane modules are bench-tested using a dedicated TC-205 chassis test rig, with each module exercised through its full I/O channel count under simulated field load conditions. TMR voting logic is verified by injecting single-channel faults and confirming correct 2-of-3 output behavior. All tested units are issued a DriveKNMS inspection certificate recording test date, technician ID, and pass/fail results per channel. Units that fail any test parameter are quarantined and not offered for sale. Packaging for TC-205 chassis cables uses anti-static shielding and rigid outer cartons to prevent connector damage in transit.
