Technical Dossier
The GE IS420 series is a core I/O and communication module family within the GE Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS), deployed globally across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, combined-cycle power plants, and LNG terminals. The IS420 platform serves as the backbone of turbine control, generator excitation, and plant-wide process automation in facilities where continuous uptime is non-negotiable. With an installed base spanning hundreds of GW of generation capacity worldwide, IS420 modules represent one of the most mission-critical spare parts categories in industrial MRO procurement.
The IS420 series was introduced as part of GE's transition from the legacy Mark V and Mark VI turbine control platforms to the fully digital, Ethernet-based Mark VIe architecture. Early Mark VI systems relied on VME-bus backplane modules with proprietary IONet communication. The IS420 generation introduced a modular, DIN-rail-compatible form factor with standardized IONet (100 Mbps Ethernet-based deterministic network) and later PROFINET integration, enabling coexistence with third-party SCADA and DCS environments.
Compatibility considerations are significant: IS420 modules are not backward-compatible with Mark V (IS200 series) I/O terminals without rewiring. Within the Mark VIe ecosystem, IS420 modules interface with VCMI, VTUR, VSVO, and VGEN controller boards via the TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy) or simplex configurations. As the Mark VIe platform has entered its mature/sustaining lifecycle phase, long-term maintenance support for IS420 modules has become a primary procurement driver — OEM lead times frequently exceed 20–40 weeks, making third-party certified inventory essential.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly deployed modules within the GE IS420 series. Each entry reflects its primary functional role within the Mark VIe architecture:
PROFINET / Communication Gateway Modules
Analog Input (AI) Modules
Analog Output (AO) Modules
Digital Input (DI) Modules
Digital Output (DO) Modules
Power Supply Modules
Servo / Speed Control Modules
As GE Vernova (formerly GE Gas Power) has transitioned its control platform roadmap toward the Mark VIeS and OpFlex architectures, a growing number of IS420 module variants have been discontinued or placed on extended lead-time allocation. Plants operating legacy Mark VIe systems face a procurement gap: OEM support contracts are expensive, and spot-market availability of specific IS420 revisions (particularly A-revision boards) is declining.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of IS420 series modules sourced from decommissioned plant assets, authorized surplus channels, and factory-refurbished stock. All units are catalogued by part number, revision level, and firmware version where applicable. For obsolete or allocation-constrained SKUs, DriveKNMS provides cross-reference analysis to identify functionally equivalent replacement modules within the IS420 or IS200 families.
IS420 modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane connectors, IONet Ethernet PHY circuits, and mixed analog/digital signal paths. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all IS420 inventory:
