Technical Dossier
The Vibro-Meter VM600 is a modular machinery protection and condition monitoring system manufactured by Meggitt SA (formerly Vibro-Meter SA), headquartered in Fribourg, Switzerland. It is deployed across critical rotating machinery applications in petrochemical plants, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and refineries worldwide. The VM600 platform conforms to API 670 (5th Edition) machinery protection standards and is certified for use in safety-instrumented systems (SIS) up to SIL 2. Its rack-based architecture supports hot-swap module replacement, enabling zero-downtime maintenance in continuous-process environments. The system is widely regarded as a benchmark platform for turbine, compressor, and pump protection in heavy industry.
The VM600 platform succeeded the earlier Vibro-Meter VM500 series, which used analog signal conditioning with limited digital integration. The VM600 introduced a fully digital backplane bus (the VME-based rack architecture) with deterministic scan rates suitable for overspeed and thrust position protection. Early VM600 racks (circa late 1990s) used the RPS600 rack power supply and supported up to 12 I/O slots per chassis. The introduction of the MPC4 (Machinery Protection Card, 4-channel) represented a consolidation from earlier single- and dual-channel cards, reducing rack density requirements by up to 50%.
Subsequent firmware revisions introduced IEC 61511 compliance pathways and expanded communication options via the CMC16 and IOCC8 interface cards, enabling integration with DCS platforms including Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Experion, ABB 800xA, and Yokogawa CENTUM VP via Modbus RTU/TCP and OPC DA/UA. The VM600 platform entered its mature/sustaining phase around 2015, with Meggitt confirming continued spare parts availability and repair services through authorized service centers. New installations increasingly use the successor Meggitt Vibro-Meter VibroSight platform, but the VM600 installed base remains extensive, making long-term spare parts sourcing a critical operational requirement for asset owners.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly deployed modules within the VM600 platform. Each entry reflects a distinct functional role within the rack architecture.
Machinery Protection Cards (MPC)
Rack Power Supplies (RPS)
I/O and Communication Cards
Speed and Phase Reference Cards
Relay Output Cards
Analog Output Cards
VM600 modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane bus communication, FPGA-based signal processing, and relay output circuits that must be verified under simulated load conditions. DriveKNMS applies a structured acceptance test procedure (ATP) for all VM600 units prior to dispatch. MPC4 cards are bench-tested using calibrated vibration signal simulators to verify channel gain accuracy (±0.5% of full scale), alarm and danger setpoint relay actuation, and 4–20 mA analog output linearity. Communication cards (CMC16, IOCC8) are validated against a live Modbus TCP/OPC DA test environment to confirm register mapping integrity. Relay output cards (ROC8) undergo contact resistance measurement and dielectric withstand testing at 1500 VAC. Power supply modules (RPS600A/B) are load-tested at 100% rated current for a minimum burn-in period of 4 hours. All test records are retained and available to customers upon request.
