Technical Dossier
The AMETEK MAE HY Series represents one of the most widely deployed families of hybrid stepper motors in global heavy industry. Manufactured by AMETEK Precision Motion Control (formerly MAE — Motori Asincroni Elettronici, Italy), these motors are installed across chemical processing plants, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, oil refineries, semiconductor fabrication lines, and precision CNC machinery. The HY Series is characterized by its two-phase hybrid stepper architecture, combining the rotor construction of a permanent magnet motor with the stator geometry of a variable reluctance motor. This design delivers high torque density, repeatable step accuracy (typically 1.8° full step / 0.9° half step), and low resonance — properties that made the series a standard specification in European and North American industrial automation from the 1980s onward. The series spans frame sizes from NEMA 17 through NEMA 34 (42 mm to 86 mm), with holding torques ranging from 0.2 N·m to over 9 N·m depending on stack length and winding configuration.
The MAE HY Series was introduced in the late 1970s as part of a broader European initiative to standardize stepper motor form factors for industrial servo and positioning applications. Early variants used single-stack configurations with bipolar winding schemes and were designed for direct coupling to lead screw assemblies in machine tools. By the mid-1980s, MAE expanded the series to include multi-stack (double and triple stack) configurations, significantly increasing available torque without increasing the motor's footprint diameter.
The acquisition of MAE by AMETEK Inc. in the early 2000s brought standardization of connector interfaces and the introduction of IP54-rated enclosure variants for use in wash-down and dusty environments. Later revisions introduced optional encoder mounts (rear-shaft extensions) and integrated damper flanges to suppress mid-range resonance — a known limitation of open-loop stepper systems operating above 500 RPM.
Compatibility note: HY Series motors use industry-standard NEMA mounting patterns and are electrically compatible with most two-phase bipolar stepper drivers (chopper-type, 24–80 VDC bus). However, winding impedance varies significantly between stack lengths and part numbers. Substituting one HY variant for another without verifying phase resistance and inductance will result in driver detuning or thermal overload. Always cross-reference the full part number before replacement.
The series is now in a mature/end-of-life phase. AMETEK has transitioned new designs to the MDrive and similar integrated motion platforms. However, installed base volume in legacy machinery ensures continued demand for HY Series spare parts through at least 2035.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked models within the AMETEK MAE HY Series. Models are organized by frame size and stack configuration.
NEMA 17 / 42 mm Frame
NEMA 23 / 57 mm Frame
NEMA 34 / 86 mm Frame
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for AMETEK MAE HY Series motors, including models that have been discontinued from the manufacturer's active catalog. As the HY Series has entered its end-of-life phase, OEM lead times for replacement units have extended to 16–26 weeks or become indefinite. DriveKNMS addresses this through three sourcing channels:
All sourced units are shipped with a certificate of conformance and a 12-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Emergency same-day dispatch is available for in-stock items.
AMETEK MAE HY Series motors present specific test challenges due to their hybrid rotor construction and the sensitivity of their winding impedance to temperature and mechanical condition. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to every HY Series unit processed:
