Technical Dossier
The Beckhoff AX2010 series represents a compact, single-axis servo drive platform engineered for integration within Beckhoff's PC-based control architecture. Deployed extensively across chemical processing plants, automotive assembly lines, packaging machinery, and precision manufacturing facilities, the AX2010 family operates as a field-proven motion control component in environments where deterministic axis control and tight EtherCAT synchronization are non-negotiable. The series interfaces directly with Beckhoff TwinCAT automation software, enabling coordinated multi-axis motion without external motion controllers. Its compact DIN-rail or panel-mount form factor has made it a standard specification in European and Asian heavy-industry OEM machine designs since its introduction. Installed base across refinery instrumentation skids, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, and petrochemical reactor control panels confirms the AX2010's position as a long-cycle industrial asset requiring sustained spare parts availability well beyond its active production window.
The AX2010 series was introduced as part of Beckhoff's first-generation EtherCAT-native servo drive lineup, succeeding earlier fieldbus-dependent drive platforms such as the AX2000 (SERCOS/CANopen). The AX2010 adopted the CoE (CANopen over EtherCAT) device profile, enabling plug-and-play axis commissioning within TwinCAT NC/PTP and CNC environments. Early hardware revisions (Revision A/B) supported single feedback interface (resolver or incremental encoder). Later revisions introduced dual-feedback capability and expanded safe-torque-off (STO) compliance to meet IEC 62061 SIL 2 requirements — a mandatory specification for machinery directive compliance in EU-regulated facilities. The AX2010 has since entered the mature/end-of-life phase of its product lifecycle. Beckhoff's current recommended migration path leads to the AX8000 multi-axis servo system, which consolidates multiple AX2010 axes onto a shared DC bus with higher power density. However, the installed base of AX2010 units in legacy machinery remains substantial, and direct form-fit-function replacement parts continue to be sourced through specialist distributors. For facilities operating AX2010 drives in long-term maintenance contracts (LTSA), third-party refurbished and new-old-stock (NOS) units remain the primary continuity strategy.

Each AX2010 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional test protocol specific to the EtherCAT servo drive architecture. The test sequence includes: incoming visual inspection for PCB damage, capacitor condition, and connector integrity; power stage verification under resistive load at rated current; EtherCAT communication link establishment and CoE object dictionary read/write verification; feedback interface test (resolver excitation signal, encoder quadrature signal integrity); STO input channel functional test per IEC 62061 diagnostic coverage requirements; and thermal cycling under load to screen latent component failures. Drives that pass all test stages are issued a DriveKNMS test certificate with date, technician ID, and measured parameters. Units that fail any stage are quarantined and not offered for resale. This protocol is specifically designed to address the known failure modes of the AX2010 platform, including IGBT gate driver degradation, DC bus capacitor ESR drift, and EtherCAT PHY chip failures common in units with extended field service hours.
