Technical Dossier
The GE Intelligent Platforms VMIVME-4140 series is a VMEbus-based analog output board deployed extensively across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil & gas platforms, and continuous-process chemical plants. Designed to interface with VME64 backplane architectures, the VMIVME-4140 provides high-resolution analog output channels used for precision process control loops — valve positioning, flow regulation, and actuator drive signals. Its rugged construction and compliance with IEEE 1014 VMEbus standards have made it a long-term fixture in distributed control system (DCS) and SCADA installations where replacement cycles span decades rather than years.
The VMIVME-4140 was introduced as part of GE Fanuc's (later GE Intelligent Platforms) VMEbus I/O expansion strategy targeting real-time industrial control environments. Early revisions operated on 12-bit DAC resolution with single-ended output configurations. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced 16-bit resolution DACs, differential output options, and improved galvanic isolation between channels to meet IEC 61000-4 EMC requirements in high-noise plant environments.
The board communicates over the VME A24/D16 address space and is compatible with VxWorks, LynxOS, and Linux-based VME controller environments. Compatibility with GE's VMIVME-7750, VMIVME-7807, and VMIVME-7696 single-board computers has been validated across multiple firmware generations. As VMEbus infrastructure has matured into a legacy-maintenance phase, the VMIVME-4140 series is no longer in active production. Sites running this hardware are in long-term sustaining mode, relying on aftermarket spare parts suppliers for board-level replacements and refurbished stock.

GE Intelligent Platforms formally discontinued active manufacturing of the VMIVME-4140 series. OEM lead times for new units are no longer available through standard distribution channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of refurbished, tested, and serialized VMIVME-4140 boards sourced from decommissioned plant equipment, controlled-environment warehouses, and verified industrial surplus channels.
For end-users operating DCS or VMEbus control systems with no near-term migration path, DriveKNMS provides: board-level refurbishment with full functional test, serialized traceability documentation, 12-month warranty on all refurbished units, and emergency same-day dispatch for critical plant shutdowns. Customers in the nuclear, petrochemical, and power generation sectors with long-term maintenance contracts can request dedicated stock reservation for VMIVME-4140 variants.
Each VMIVME-4140 board processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured test protocol designed around the board's VMEbus backplane interface and multi-channel DAC architecture. Test procedures include: VME A24/D16 address decode verification across the full address map; per-channel DAC linearity test (INL/DNL measurement at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of full-scale output); output voltage and current accuracy verification against calibrated reference instruments (Keysight 34461A or equivalent); isolation resistance test between channel outputs and chassis ground (>100MΩ at 500VDC); thermal soak at 55°C for 2 hours under full output load; and visual inspection of DAC ICs, op-amp output stages, and VME connector pin integrity. Boards failing any single test parameter are quarantined and not released for sale.
