Phoenix Contact QUINT-PS Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The Phoenix Contact QUINT-PS series represents one of the most widely deployed families of DIN-rail mounted industrial power supply units in global heavy industry. Installed across chemical processing plants, nuclear power facilities, oil refineries, offshore platforms, and large-scale manufacturing automation systems, the QUINT-PS line has established a dominant position as the reference standard for 24 VDC bus power in safety-critical environments. Its SFB (Selective Fuse Breaking) technology, active current limiting, and preventive function monitoring distinguish it from conventional SELV power supplies, making it the preferred choice for system integrators working under IEC 61508 and IEC 62061 functional safety frameworks.

The series covers input configurations from single-phase AC (1AC) to three-phase AC (3AC) and DC input variants, with output current ratings from 5 A to 40 A at 24 VDC, and specialized variants for 12 VDC, 48 VDC, and 110 VDC output rails. The QUINT-PS platform is engineered for continuous operation at ambient temperatures up to 60°C with derating, and carries approvals including UL 508, GL, ATEX Zone 2, and cULus.

The Evolution of QUINT-PS Architecture

The QUINT-PS series was introduced by Phoenix Contact in the early 2000s as a successor to the MINI-PS and TRIO-PS families, targeting applications that required active load management beyond passive current limiting. The first-generation QUINT-PS units introduced the SFB (Selective Fuse Breaking) concept, enabling the power supply to deliver up to 200% of rated current for 12 ms to selectively blow downstream branch fuses without tripping the upstream breaker — a critical capability in multi-branch 24 VDC distribution panels.

The second-generation QUINT-PS introduced the POWER BOOST function, extending the overcurrent delivery window and adding a front-panel diagnostic LED matrix for load state, output voltage, and preventive maintenance signaling. This generation also introduced the first variants with integrated battery charging outputs (QUINT-BUFFER and QUINT-UPS derivatives).

The third-generation QUINT4-PS series (introduced circa 2018) added Ethernet-based remote monitoring via PROFINET and IO-Link, a graphical display, and enhanced energy efficiency ratings (up to 95.5% efficiency). The QUINT4-PS is the current active production line and serves as the direct functional replacement for legacy QUINT-PS units in new installations. However, the original QUINT-PS series remains in active service across thousands of installed base systems, and spare part demand remains high through 2030+ due to long plant lifecycle commitments.

Compatibility note: QUINT-PS and QUINT4-PS units share the same DIN-rail footprint and terminal pitch for most current ratings, but firmware-based features (IO-Link, display) are not backward-compatible. Replacement of a QUINT-PS with a QUINT4-PS in an existing panel requires no mechanical modification but does require updated documentation.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete QUINT-PS Parts

Phoenix Contact has transitioned the majority of the original QUINT-PS line to end-of-life (EOL) or limited-availability status as the QUINT4-PS series has matured. For plant operators and system integrators maintaining legacy DCS and PLC panels with original QUINT-PS units, sourcing genuine replacement modules through standard distribution channels has become increasingly difficult, with lead times extending to 16–26 weeks or resulting in no-quote responses.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of QUINT-PS series units sourced through certified secondary market channels. All units are subject to full functional verification prior to dispatch. DriveKNMS supports lifecycle extension programs for facilities operating under long-term maintenance contracts where like-for-like replacement is a contractual or regulatory requirement — common in nuclear, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments governed by 21 CFR Part 11 or equivalent change-control frameworks.

For EOL models including QUINT-PS/1AC/24DC/20, QUINT-PS/3AC/24DC/40, and QUINT-UPS variants, DriveKNMS can provide: verified surplus stock, refurbished units with test certificates, and cross-reference documentation for QUINT4-PS substitution where change control permits.

Quality Control for the QUINT-PS Range

QUINT-PS units incorporate active power electronics including PFC (Power Factor Correction) stages, SFB output circuits, and in UPS variants, battery charge management ICs. Standard visual inspection and continuity testing are insufficient for this class of power supply. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all QUINT-PS units processed through its facility:

  • Full-load burn-in at rated output current (20 A for QUINT-PS/1AC/24DC/20) for a minimum of 2 hours at ambient temperature
  • SFB function verification: output short-circuit applied, peak current measured and confirmed within 200% ± 10% of rated current for the specified 12 ms window
  • POWER BOOST verification: sustained overload at 125% rated current, boost duration measured against datasheet specification
  • Output voltage regulation check across 10%, 50%, and 100% load steps
  • Input voltage range sweep: 85 VAC to 264 VAC for 1AC variants; 340 VAC to 550 VAC for 3AC variants
  • Signaling output verification: OK relay contact continuity confirmed under fault and normal conditions
  • Thermal imaging at full load to identify hot-spot anomalies in capacitor banks and transformer windings
  • Final calibration record issued with each unit, traceable to test bench serial number and date
