Technical Dossier
The Vibro-Meter VM600 is a modular, rack-based machinery protection and condition monitoring system developed by Vibro-Meter SA (Switzerland), subsequently integrated into the Meggitt Sensing Systems portfolio and now maintained under Baker Hughes. The VM600 platform holds a dominant installed base across global heavy industry, including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, and LNG terminals. Its architecture complies with API 670 (5th Edition) for machinery protection, making it the reference standard for turbomachinery monitoring on gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, and pumps. Thousands of VM600 racks remain in continuous operation worldwide, creating sustained demand for spare modules, CPU cards, and I/O boards — many of which are no longer in active production.
The VM600 system was introduced in the mid-1990s as a successor to the earlier VM500 and VM5000 series, transitioning from analog signal conditioning to a fully digital, backplane-bus architecture. The core design philosophy centers on a passive 19-inch rack (available in 6-slot, 12-slot, and 18-slot configurations) populated with function-specific plug-in modules communicating over a proprietary VMEbus-derived backplane.
Early VM600 deployments used the 200-595-044-114 CPU variant with RS-232/RS-485 serial communication. The mid-generation refresh introduced the 200-595-054-014 CPU with expanded memory and Ethernet capability. The current-generation 200-595-064-114 CPU-M card adds dual Ethernet ports, Modbus TCP, and OPC-DA server functionality, enabling direct integration with modern DCS platforms (Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, ABB 800xA). Compatibility between generations is maintained at the backplane level, allowing mixed-generation module populations within a single rack — a critical factor for brownfield plant upgrades where full system replacement is cost-prohibitive.
As of 2026, the VM600 series is in the mature/end-of-life phase. Vibro-Meter/Meggitt has transitioned new project specifications to the Meggitt Vibro-Meter VibroSystM and Baker Hughes Bently Nevada 3500 platforms. However, the installed base of VM600 systems in long-lifecycle facilities (nuclear, refinery, LNG) ensures continued demand for spare parts and long-term maintenance support through 2035 and beyond.

VM600 modules present specific test challenges due to their proprietary backplane communication protocol and multi-channel analog signal paths. DriveKNMS applies a structured verification process for all VM600 stock:
Modules failing any test stage are quarantined and not offered for sale. Test records are retained and available upon request for critical applications.
