Technical Dossier
The Vibro-Meter VM600 is a modular machinery protection and condition monitoring system manufactured by Meggitt SA (formerly Vibro-Meter SA), headquartered in Fribourg, Switzerland. It is deployed across the most demanding continuous-process industries globally, including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and combined-cycle gas turbine plants. The VM600 platform conforms to API 670 (5th Edition) machinery protection standards and is certified for use in safety-instrumented systems (SIS) up to SIL 2. Its rack-based, backplane-bus architecture allows mixed-function module configurations within a single 19-inch chassis, making it the reference standard for turbomachinery protection in heavy industry.
The VM600 platform succeeded the earlier Vibro-Meter VM500 series, which used analog signal conditioning with discrete relay outputs and lacked digital fieldbus integration. The VM600 introduced a proprietary high-speed digital backplane (RACKbus) enabling deterministic inter-module communication at sub-millisecond latency — a critical requirement for overspeed and surge protection applications.
Early VM600 chassis (circa late 1990s) supported only the original MPC4 and IOC4T card set. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced the AMC8 (8-channel analog monitoring), the TDXnet communication adapter for Ethernet-based data acquisition, and the XMx16 series for expanded I/O density. The platform's firmware architecture has undergone three major revisions: VM600 Rack v1.x (legacy, no longer supported), v2.x (current production), and v3.x (introduced with the RPS6U redundant power supply generation). Backward compatibility between v1.x and v2.x backplane modules is not guaranteed; mixed-generation racks require engineering validation before deployment.
As of 2026, the VM600 platform is in its mature/sustaining phase. Meggitt has not announced a successor platform for the core rack architecture, but new project specifications increasingly reference the Meggitt Cirus digital monitoring system for greenfield installations. VM600 installed base support — including spare parts, firmware, and calibration services — remains active through Meggitt's authorized service network and specialist third-party suppliers such as DriveKNMS.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced modules within the VM600 platform. Modules are classified by functional category.
Machinery Protection Cards (MPC)
I/O and Output Cards (IOC)
Analog Monitoring Cards (AMC)
Communication and Network Adapters
Rack Controller and CPU Modules
Power Supply Modules
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for VM600 modules that have been discontinued by Meggitt or are subject to extended lead times through OEM channels. The VM600 MPC4 200-510-071-113 and associated IOC4T cards are among the most frequently requested items from operators running legacy turbomachinery protection systems installed between 2000 and 2015.
DriveKNMS sources VM600 spare parts through a combination of decommissioned plant asset recovery, authorized distributor overstock, and direct OEM surplus channels. All units are serialized and cross-referenced against Meggitt's published hardware revision matrices to ensure backplane compatibility before dispatch. For operators requiring long-term maintenance agreements (LTMAs) covering VM600 racks beyond OEM support windows, DriveKNMS provides multi-year stocking contracts with guaranteed response times.
Customers operating nuclear or safety-critical installations are advised to request full material traceability documentation (MTR), including original manufacturer certificates of conformance (CoC), upon inquiry.
VM600 modules incorporate a high-density backplane connector system (96-pin DIN 41612 Type C) and a proprietary RACKbus differential signal pair. Standard incoming inspection procedures at DriveKNMS include the following steps for VM600 cards:
All test records are retained for a minimum of 10 years and are available to customers upon request.
