Technical Dossier
The General Electric MMLG series represents a standardized line of safety relay and protective relay modules engineered for deployment in high-criticality industrial environments. These modules are installed across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil and gas platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants. The MMLG platform was developed to meet IEC and ANSI protective relay standards, providing deterministic response times and high-isolation switching for machine safety circuits. Its modular form factor and DIN-rail compatibility made it a preferred choice for panel builders and system integrators operating within GE's broader protection and control ecosystem. The installed base of MMLG modules remains substantial in facilities commissioned between the 1990s and 2010s, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational concern for maintenance engineers worldwide.
The MMLG series originated as part of GE's Multilin protective relay product family, designed to interface with electromechanical and early solid-state protection schemes. Early variants used plug-in relay elements with hand-reset mechanisms and were compatible with GE's MMII and MM3 motor management relay platforms. As industrial automation advanced through the 2000s, the MMLG line was updated to support digital communication interfaces and expanded I/O configurations, enabling integration with SCADA and DCS architectures via Modbus RTU and DNP3 protocols. Later revisions introduced enhanced EMC shielding and wider operating temperature ranges to address deployment in harsh environments. The series has now entered a mature/end-of-life phase for several sub-models, with GE Multilin (now part of GE Grid Solutions) directing new installations toward the SR series and Multilin 850/750 platform. However, the MMLG installed base in legacy facilities requires ongoing spare parts support, and direct replacement modules remain in demand for maintenance-without-redesign scenarios.

Each MMLG module processed through DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional test protocol specific to safety relay architectures. The test sequence includes: visual inspection of relay coil housing, contact block, and terminal integrity; insulation resistance measurement between coil and contact circuits (minimum 100MΩ at 500VDC); coil pull-in and drop-out voltage verification against GE published specifications; contact resistance measurement on all N/O and N/C outputs (target <100mΩ); forced-guided contact mechanism verification to confirm mechanical linkage integrity (critical for SIL-rated applications); and operational cycle testing under rated load conditions. For modules with integrated diagnostics or communication outputs, firmware version verification and communication port continuity checks are performed. All test results are logged and retained for a minimum of five years, with certificates of conformance available for quality-critical procurement requirements.
