PROSOFT MVI56E Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The PROSOFT MVI56E series represents ProSoft Technology's second-generation in-chassis communication module platform, designed exclusively for Rockwell Automation's Allen-Bradley ControlLogix backplane (1756 series). These modules are deployed across global heavy industry verticals including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore oil & gas platforms, and large-scale water treatment facilities. The MVI56E platform replaced the legacy MVI56 series by introducing an enhanced onboard web server, expanded diagnostic LED arrays, and a standardized RJ45 Ethernet configuration port — eliminating the need for serial configuration cables. Installed base estimates place MVI56E units in tens of thousands of ControlLogix racks worldwide, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational concern for plant maintenance engineers.

The Evolution of MVI56E Architecture

ProSoft Technology introduced the original MVI56 platform in the early 2000s as a single-slot ControlLogix communication bridge. The architecture relied on a proprietary backplane ASIC to exchange data blocks with the Logix controller via MSG instructions. Configuration was performed exclusively via RS-232 serial port using ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) software.

The MVI56E generation ("E" denoting Enhanced) was released progressively from approximately 2008 onward. Key architectural changes included: migration from DB-9 serial configuration to RJ45 Ethernet configuration port; introduction of an embedded web server for real-time diagnostics and port statistics; expanded internal memory for larger data table mapping; and improved EMI shielding for compliance with IEC 61000-4 industrial immunity standards. The MVI56E modules retain full software compatibility with ProSoft Configuration Builder and are backward-compatible with ControlLogix firmware from v13 onward.

As of 2024, the MVI56E series is classified by ProSoft Technology as a mature product line. No new hardware revisions are planned. Customers operating ControlLogix L7x and L8x controllers are directed toward the PLX51 series (DIN-rail mounted, EtherNet/IP native) as the strategic migration path. However, the installed base of MVI56E modules in legacy L55 and L61/L62/L63 chassis remains substantial, sustaining demand for replacement units and long-term maintenance stock.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete MVI56E Parts

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for MVI56E series modules, including units that have been discontinued or placed on extended lead time by ProSoft Technology's authorized distribution network. Our sourcing process covers:

  • New-surplus stock from decommissioned plant assets and system integrator overstock
  • Tested-used units with full functional verification against ProSoft's published test specifications
  • Cross-reference matching for customers migrating from MVI56 (non-E) to MVI56E equivalents
  • Emergency same-day quotation for unplanned plant shutdowns requiring immediate replacement

For end-of-life models such as early MVI56E-MNET hardware revisions (Rev A/B), DriveKNMS can provide unit-level traceability documentation and, where applicable, firmware version confirmation prior to shipment. Customers in regulated industries (nuclear, pharmaceutical) can request material certification packages.

Quality Control for the MVI56E Range

MVI56E modules incorporate a multi-layer backplane communication architecture that requires protocol-specific functional testing beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following test procedures to all MVI56E units processed through our facility:

  • Backplane Communication Test: Module is installed in a live 1756 ControlLogix chassis (L61 or L71 controller) and data block exchange is verified via RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 online monitoring
  • Protocol Port Functional Test: Each communication port (Ethernet RJ45 or serial DB-9/RJ45) is exercised using a protocol-specific test master/slave device to confirm frame transmission and reception
  • Web Server Diagnostic Verification: The onboard Ethernet configuration port is accessed to confirm web server responsiveness and port statistics display
  • LED Status Verification: All front-panel LEDs (BP ACT, APP, CFG, STS, P1/P2 TX/RX) are confirmed against ProSoft's published LED diagnostic table
  • Extended Temperature Units: MVI56E-MNETXT and MVI56E-MCMXT variants undergo thermal soak testing at elevated ambient to confirm XT-rated component performance
