Technical Dossier
The ProSoft Technology 5201-MNET-MCM is a communication gateway module designed for integration between Modbus TCP/IP Ethernet networks and Modbus RTU/ASCII serial networks in a Master/Slave configuration. It operates as a plug-in module within the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix (5000-series) backplane environment, enabling deterministic data exchange between Ethernet-based SCADA systems and legacy serial Modbus field devices.
This module has established a significant installed base across global heavy industries including petrochemical refineries, offshore oil & gas platforms, nuclear power auxiliary systems, and large-scale water treatment facilities. Its ability to bridge modern Ethernet infrastructure with legacy Modbus serial instrumentation makes it a critical component in brownfield automation projects where full system replacement is not economically viable. The 5201-MNET-MCM supports up to 100 Modbus TCP/IP client/server connections and handles up to 5,000 registers of data exchange per scan cycle, making it suitable for high-density I/O environments.
ProSoft Technology introduced the MVI56 and 5201-series communication modules in the early 2000s as the industrial automation market transitioned from proprietary fieldbus protocols to Ethernet-based communication. The 5201-MNET-MCM was developed to address the persistent coexistence of Modbus RTU/ASCII serial devices — installed throughout the 1980s and 1990s — with emerging Modbus TCP/IP Ethernet infrastructure.
Generation 1 (2002–2008): Initial firmware supported basic Modbus TCP/IP client and server functions with limited diagnostic capability. Configuration was performed via ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) software over a serial RS-232 connection.
Generation 2 (2008–2015): Firmware revisions introduced enhanced diagnostics, expanded register mapping capacity, and support for Ethernet-based configuration. Compatibility with RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 Add-On Instructions (AOI) was formalized, reducing integration time significantly.
Generation 3 / Current (2015–present): The module architecture was refined for improved thermal tolerance and EMI resistance. ProSoft introduced the MVI56E-MNET as the enhanced successor, adding web-based diagnostics and expanded connection counts. The 5201-MNET-MCM remains in active use at sites where the original ControlLogix chassis configuration cannot accommodate the MVI56E form factor or where firmware compatibility with older Logix firmware versions is required.
Compatibility note: The 5201-MNET-MCM is compatible with ControlLogix firmware versions 13.x through 20.x. Sites running firmware 21.x and above should evaluate the MVI56E-MNET or MVI56-MNET-MCM as direct replacements.

The 5201-MNET-MCM has entered the mature phase of its product lifecycle. ProSoft Technology continues to provide firmware support, but new unit production has been consolidated into the MVI56E-MNET platform. As a result, procurement of new 5201-MNET-MCM units through standard distribution channels has become increasingly constrained.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of legacy ProSoft communication modules, including the 5201-MNET-MCM, sourced through certified secondary market channels. All units are subject to pre-shipment functional verification. DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support for facilities operating the 5201-MNET-MCM in long-term maintenance contracts, including:
The 5201-MNET-MCM and related ProSoft ControlLogix communication modules present specific testing requirements due to their backplane-dependent architecture and dual-interface communication design. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all units prior to dispatch:
