Kontron AM4140 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The Kontron AM4140 series is a line of CompactPCI (cPCI) PICMG-compliant single-board computers deployed across global heavy industry, including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power plant control rooms, offshore oil & gas platforms, and continuous-process chemical manufacturing facilities. These environments require deterministic real-time performance, extended temperature tolerance, and multi-decade serviceability. The AM4140 platform is based on Intel x86 processor architecture and integrates onboard memory, I/O interfaces, and ruggedized connectors for 19-inch rack-mount and embedded chassis deployments. Its installed base spans critical infrastructure in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East, where system replacement cycles routinely exceed 15–20 years, making long-term spare parts availability a primary operational concern.

The Evolution of AM4140 Architecture

The AM4140 platform was introduced by Kontron as a CompactPCI 3U form-factor processor board. Early revisions utilized Intel Pentium III processors at 733 MHz to 1.0 GHz, paired with PC133 SDRAM up to 512 MB. These initial variants — including the base AM4140 and AM4140-SA — established the board as a front-end controller in SCADA and DCS architectures.

Subsequent revisions introduced the AM4140-SA-1.5(E)O sub-family, upgrading to Intel Pentium III at 1.5 GHz with dual Fast Ethernet (the "(E)" suffix), extended operating temperature -40°C to +85°C (the "O" suffix), and front-panel I/O routing (the "-FR" suffix). The AM4140-SA-1.5(E)O-4-FR represents the highest-specification production variant in this series. Later architectural evolution moved to the AM4200 and AM4300 series with Intel Core 2 Duo and Atom processors and PCIe backplane compatibility. The AM4140 series is now end-of-life (EOL); Kontron has ceased active production, making third-party refurbished and new-old-stock (NOS) sourcing the primary supply channel for maintenance operations.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete AM4140 Parts

The AM4140 series has reached end-of-production status. Kontron no longer manufactures or provides factory repair services for these modules. For operators of legacy DCS, SCADA, and embedded control systems built on the AM4140 platform, DriveKNMS provides structured lifecycle extension support through three channels:

  • New-Old-Stock (NOS) Supply: DriveKNMS maintains warehouse inventory of sealed, factory-original AM4140 units sourced from decommissioned system lots and authorized distributor closeouts. Each unit retains original Kontron part labeling where available.
  • Refurbished Exchange Program: Functional pull units are accepted for credit against refurbished replacements. All refurbished AM4140 boards undergo full functional restoration including BIOS reset, connector inspection, and burn-in testing.
  • Emergency Cross-Ship: For unplanned downtime events, DriveKNMS offers same-day dispatch on in-stock AM4140 variants via DHL Express and FedEx Priority international shipping to minimize plant downtime exposure.

Customers operating AM4140-based systems in nuclear, petrochemical, or continuous-process environments are advised to establish a standing spare parts agreement to mitigate supply chain risk for this EOL platform.

Quality Control for the AM4140 Range

The AM4140 series incorporates a multi-layer CompactPCI backplane interface and proprietary Kontron BIOS firmware, requiring specialized test procedures beyond standard bench power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following QC protocol to all AM4140 units:

  • Backplane Bus Integrity Test: Each board is seated in a reference 4-slot cPCI chassis and subjected to 32-bit/33 MHz PCI bus loopback testing across all J1/J2 connector pins.
  • Processor & Memory Validation: CPU clock speed is confirmed via POST readout. SDRAM is tested with memtest86+ for a minimum of two full passes to detect single-bit and multi-bit error patterns.
  • Ethernet Port Functional Test: Both Fast Ethernet ports are tested for link negotiation, packet transmission, and error-free throughput at 100 Mbps using a dedicated network test instrument.
  • Thermal Stress Screening: Units for extended-temperature applications are subjected to a 4-hour thermal soak at +70°C under full CPU load to screen for latent component failures.
  • BIOS & Firmware Verification: Kontron BIOS version is confirmed against the last known production release. Units with corrupted firmware are reflashed using Kontron-sourced binary images where available.
  • Final Cosmetic & Mechanical Inspection: PCB surface, front-panel connectors, ejector handles, and board-edge fingers are inspected under magnification. Units with damaged connectors or delaminated PCB areas are quarantined.
