Technical Dossier
The Kontron AM4140 series is a line of CompactPCI (cPCI) PICMG-compliant single-board computers deployed across global heavy industry, including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power plant control rooms, offshore oil & gas platforms, and continuous-process chemical manufacturing facilities. These environments require deterministic real-time performance, extended temperature tolerance, and multi-decade serviceability. The AM4140 platform is based on Intel x86 processor architecture and integrates onboard memory, I/O interfaces, and ruggedized connectors for 19-inch rack-mount and embedded chassis deployments. Its installed base spans critical infrastructure in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East, where system replacement cycles routinely exceed 15–20 years, making long-term spare parts availability a primary operational concern.
The AM4140 platform was introduced by Kontron as a CompactPCI 3U form-factor processor board. Early revisions utilized Intel Pentium III processors at 733 MHz to 1.0 GHz, paired with PC133 SDRAM up to 512 MB. These initial variants — including the base AM4140 and AM4140-SA — established the board as a front-end controller in SCADA and DCS architectures.
Subsequent revisions introduced the AM4140-SA-1.5(E)O sub-family, upgrading to Intel Pentium III at 1.5 GHz with dual Fast Ethernet (the "(E)" suffix), extended operating temperature -40°C to +85°C (the "O" suffix), and front-panel I/O routing (the "-FR" suffix). The AM4140-SA-1.5(E)O-4-FR represents the highest-specification production variant in this series. Later architectural evolution moved to the AM4200 and AM4300 series with Intel Core 2 Duo and Atom processors and PCIe backplane compatibility. The AM4140 series is now end-of-life (EOL); Kontron has ceased active production, making third-party refurbished and new-old-stock (NOS) sourcing the primary supply channel for maintenance operations.

The AM4140 series has reached end-of-production status. Kontron no longer manufactures or provides factory repair services for these modules. For operators of legacy DCS, SCADA, and embedded control systems built on the AM4140 platform, DriveKNMS provides structured lifecycle extension support through three channels:
Customers operating AM4140-based systems in nuclear, petrochemical, or continuous-process environments are advised to establish a standing spare parts agreement to mitigate supply chain risk for this EOL platform.
The AM4140 series incorporates a multi-layer CompactPCI backplane interface and proprietary Kontron BIOS firmware, requiring specialized test procedures beyond standard bench power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following QC protocol to all AM4140 units:
