Technical Dossier
The OMRON NE2A series is a dedicated DeviceNet Safety I/O system designed for machine safety applications in heavy industrial environments including chemical plants, oil refineries, semiconductor fabs, and automotive assembly lines. Compliant with IEC 61508 SIL2 and EN ISO 13849-1 PLe, the NE2A platform enables distributed safety I/O over standard DeviceNet cabling without requiring a dedicated safety fieldbus. Its architecture allows integration into existing DeviceNet networks managed by OMRON CS/CJ-series PLCs or third-party DeviceNet masters, making it a cost-effective safety upgrade path for brownfield installations. The series has achieved widespread deployment across Asia-Pacific and European process industries where machine guarding, emergency stop circuits, and light curtain interfacing are mandatory compliance requirements.
The NE2A series was introduced by OMRON as part of its Safety Network Controller ecosystem, positioned to bridge conventional DeviceNet infrastructure with IEC 61508-compliant safety logic. Early deployments relied on the NE2A-SCPU01 as the sole safety CPU node, with I/O expansion handled via dedicated slave modules connected through the internal NE2A bus. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced improved diagnostic coverage, faster safety response times (≤6 ms typical), and expanded I/O density per node. The series operates on the DeviceNet Safety (ODVA) protocol layer, ensuring interoperability with third-party safety devices certified to the same standard. As the broader OMRON safety portfolio evolved toward the NX-series Safety CPU (NX-SL□□□□) and EtherNet/IP-based safety networks, the NE2A series transitioned into a mature/sustaining lifecycle phase. OMRON continues to supply NE2A modules for installed-base maintenance, but new machine designs are directed toward the NX Safety platform. This lifecycle position makes long-term spare parts availability a critical procurement concern for facilities running NE2A-based safety systems.
The following SKUs represent the verified NE2A series module range. Each entry is classified by functional category.
Safety CPU / Master Units
Digital Safety Input Modules (DI)
Digital Safety Output Modules (DO)
Mixed I/O Modules (AI/DI Combination)
Power Supply Modules (PS)
Communication / Expansion Adapters
End Plates / Termination Accessories
NE2A modules incorporate internal bus communication logic and safety-rated I/O circuitry that requires function-specific test procedures beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following inspection protocol to all NE2A units: visual inspection of backplane connector pins and bus termination contacts for oxidation or mechanical deformation; powered functional test using a DeviceNet Safety network simulator to verify node address assignment, I/O data exchange, and safety response time within OMRON-specified limits; diagnostic output verification to confirm that fault detection circuits (cross-circuit detection, short-circuit detection) activate correctly under simulated fault conditions; for power supply modules (NE2A-PD025, NE2A-PD050), output voltage stability and current capacity are measured under rated load conditions before shipment.
