Technical Dossier
The Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus 6 (PVP6) series, manufactured by Rockwell Automation, represents one of the most widely deployed human-machine interface (HMI) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, offshore marine platforms, LNG terminals, and continuous-process chemical plants, the PVP6 series operates under the FactoryTalk View ME runtime environment and communicates natively over EtherNet/IP, DH-485, and DF1 protocols. Its modular architecture—separating display terminals from logic controllers and communication adapters—enables targeted component replacement without full-system downtime, a critical requirement in 24/7 process environments.
Rockwell Automation introduced the original PanelView Plus (2711P) platform in the early 2000s as a successor to the PanelView Standard and PanelView Enhanced lines. The PVP6 generation formalized the 700–1500 display size range with standardized mounting cutouts, a unified FactoryTalk View ME firmware stack, and a modular terminal/logic/communication assembly. Key architectural milestones include:
Generation 1 (2711P-Bxxxx): Integrated terminals combining display, logic, and communication in a single sealed unit. Limited field serviceability.
Generation 2 – Modular Architecture (2711P-Rxxxx / 2711P-Txxxx): Separation of display module (R-series), logic module (L-series), and communication adapter (C-series). Enabled independent replacement of failed subsystems. Introduced CCFL backlight technology.
Generation 3 – LED Backlight Transition (2711P-RDTxxxx): CCFL backlights replaced with LED arrays, extending MTBF and eliminating mercury-containing components. The 2711P-RDT7CM belongs to this generation—a 7-inch WVGA (800×480) color touch display module with marine-grade environmental rating (IP66 front bezel), designed for shipboard and offshore installations subject to IEC 60945 vibration and humidity standards.
Compatibility Note: PVP6 display modules (R/RDT series) are mechanically and electrically compatible with PVP6 logic modules (L-series) and communication adapters (C-series) within the same terminal class. Cross-generation compatibility with PanelView Plus 7 (2711R series) is not supported—firmware, mounting, and connector interfaces differ.

Rockwell Automation has transitioned active development to the PanelView Plus 7 (2711R) platform. Several PVP6 SKUs—particularly CCFL-backlit display modules and first-generation logic modules—have entered end-of-life status, with Rockwell's own repair and replacement programs winding down. For facilities operating PVP6 terminals in long-lifecycle environments (refineries, power generation, marine vessels), sourcing replacement modules through authorized aftermarket distributors is the primary lifecycle extension strategy.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of PanelView Plus 6 modules, including discontinued CCFL display units, legacy communication adapters (DH+, RS-485), and logic modules no longer available through standard distribution channels. All units are sourced from decommissioned systems, tested to original Rockwell Automation functional specifications, and supplied with full traceability documentation. Minimum lead time for in-stock items is 3–5 business days; custom procurement for low-volume obsolete SKUs is available on request.
PVP6 modules present specific test challenges due to their multi-board architecture and proprietary backplane communication bus. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all PVP6 units prior to shipment:
Display Module Testing: Each display module is powered via a calibrated 24 VDC bench supply and driven through a full-screen color gradient sequence to identify dead pixels, backlight uniformity defects, and touch digitizer calibration errors. LED backlight modules (RDT series) are tested for luminance output against factory specification (minimum 400 cd/m²). Marine-rated units (CM suffix) undergo additional IP66 seal integrity verification.
Logic Module Testing: Logic modules are loaded with a reference FactoryTalk View ME application and cycled through communication protocol handshakes on EtherNet/IP, DF1, and DH-485 interfaces. Memory integrity is verified via full read/write cycle on the SD card interface. USB host and device ports are tested for enumeration and data transfer.
Communication Adapter Testing: Adapters are tested in-circuit with a reference PLC (Allen-Bradley CompactLogix or MicroLogix) to verify protocol negotiation, baud rate stability, and error-free data exchange over a minimum 30-minute continuous run.
Final Assembly Verification: Assembled terminals (display + logic + communication) are powered and run for a minimum 4-hour burn-in period under ambient temperature cycling (0°C to 50°C) to screen for early-life failures.
