Technical Dossier
The 1770 product family was introduced alongside the original PLC-5 platform in the early 1980s. Early variants such as the 1770-SA and 1770-SB power supplies were designed for fixed-chassis configurations, providing regulated DC power to processor and I/O modules. As the PLC-5 platform matured through the 1990s, communication adapter modules (1770-KF2, 1770-KFC, 1770-KFC15) were introduced to support Data Highway Plus (DH+) and DH-485 network topologies, enabling distributed I/O and peer-to-peer messaging across plant-wide control networks.
The transition from parallel backplane architectures to ControlNet and EtherNet/IP in the early 2000s marked the beginning of the 1770 series' lifecycle decline. Rockwell Automation formally announced end-of-life for the majority of 1770-series components between 2010 and 2018. However, the installed base in brownfield facilities has sustained a robust secondary market for tested, refurbished, and new-surplus 1770 components. Compatibility between early and late 1770-series hardware is generally maintained within the same chassis family, though firmware revisions on communication modules require verification against PLC-5 processor firmware levels.

The 1770 series presents specific quality verification challenges due to the age of the product line and the complexity of its backplane communication protocols. DriveKNMS applies the following test procedures to all 1770-series units:
