Allen-Bradley Ultra3000 Series Technical Notes

The Allen-Bradley Ultra3000 series (catalog prefix 2098-DSD) is a family of digital servo drives manufactured by Rockwell Automation. Deployed across continuous-process industries including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, and automotive assembly lines, the Ultra3000 platform is one of the most widely installed servo drive architectures in North American and Asia-Pacific heavy industry. Its modular design, native SERCOS and DeviceNet communication options, and compatibility with the Logix control platform established it as the standard servo solution for motion-critical applications from the late 1990s through the 2010s. The series spans output current ratings from 2.5 A continuous to 35 A continuous, covering single-axis and multi-axis configurations.

The Evolution of Ultra3000 Architecture

The Ultra3000 platform was introduced by Rockwell Automation in the late 1990s as a successor to the Ultra100 and Ultra200 analog servo drive families. The initial 2098-DSD generation established a DSP-based digital current loop architecture, replacing analog velocity and torque loops with fully digital control at 8 kHz bandwidth. Early variants communicated via RS-232/RS-485 and required external motion controllers such as the IMC S-Class or 1756-M02AE ControlLogix motion module.

The second architectural generation introduced native SERCOS I fiber-optic ring communication (2098-DSD-xxxX suffix), enabling deterministic real-time position loop closure at 1 ms and 2 ms update rates directly from the 1756-SERCOS ControlLogix module. This eliminated the need for standalone motion controllers in most applications. A parallel branch introduced DeviceNet connectivity (2098-DSD-xxxX-DN suffix) for velocity and torque mode applications without full position loop requirements.
