Allen-Bradley MPL Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of MPL Series Architecture

The MPL series was introduced as part of Rockwell Automation's transition from the legacy 1326AB and 1326AS servo motor families to the unified Kinetix motion platform in the early 2000s. Early MPL frames (A-frame, 31xx and 32xx) targeted low-inertia, high-speed spindle and feed-axis applications on CNC machinery. Mid-generation releases expanded the frame range to B, C, and D frames (43xx–68xx), addressing higher torque requirements in packaging, press, and material handling lines.

MPL Series Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following catalog numbers represent verified, commonly stocked MPL series configurations. SKUs are organized by frame size and power class. Each entry reflects a distinct combination of stack length, feedback type, brake option, and connector style.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete MPL Series Parts

DriveKNMS sources MPL units through a verified secondary market network, including decommissioned OEM lines, surplus equipment auctions, and certified repair-and-return programs. All units undergo full electrical and mechanical inspection before dispatch. For end-users operating MPL motors on Kinetix 6000 or 6500 platforms — both of which are now in Rockwell's End of Life notification cycle — DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support: sourcing replacement motors, cross-referencing compatible feedback cable assemblies (2090-XXNFMF-Sxx), and advising on drive-motor compatibility matrices to avoid firmware mismatch faults (F004, F007).

Quality Control for the MPL Series Range

MPL series motors present specific inspection challenges due to their integrated single-cable feedback architecture and high-resolution encoder assemblies (multi-turn absolute, 4,194,304 counts/rev on current variants). DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all MPL units processed through its facility:

  • Winding resistance and insulation test: Phase-to-phase resistance balance (±5% tolerance) and megohm insulation test at 500V DC between windings and frame.
  • Encoder signal verification: Hiperface DSL or EnDat 2.2 protocol signal integrity check using a dedicated servo analyzer, confirming absolute position data, battery backup function (multi-turn), and error flag status.
  • Brake engagement test: Static holding torque verification against nameplate specification (±10%) for brake-equipped variants.
  • Bearing noise and runout check: Shaft runout measured with a dial indicator (tolerance: ≤0.025 mm TIR); audible bearing inspection at rated speed under no-load condition.
  • Connector and cable integrity: SpeedTec DIN and flying-lead connector pin inspection for corrosion, deformation, and correct seating torque.
