ABB 5SNG Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The ABB 5SNG series is ABB Semiconductors' HiPak-platform dual IGBT power module line, covering voltage classes from 1700 V to 6500 V and current ratings from 150 A to 600 A. These modules are deployed as the primary switching elements in medium-voltage variable-speed drives (ACS 1000, ACS 6000, PCS 6000), STATCOM reactive compensation systems, HVDC Light converter valves, and traction inverters for rail applications. Installation sites include petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore oil and gas platforms, steel mill rolling lines, and grid-scale energy storage facilities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. The 5SNG series is manufactured to IEC 60747-9 and qualified under ABB's HiPak reliability protocol, which encompasses power cycling, thermal shock, and humidity-freeze testing. The global installed base exceeds several hundred thousand units across more than 40 countries, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational concern for plant engineers and maintenance managers.

The Evolution of 5SNG Architecture

ABB's 5SNG designation is part of the HiPak module platform introduced in the late 1990s as a successor to discrete press-pack thyristor and GTO stacks. The first-generation 5SNG devices (circa 1998–2004) used planar IGBT cell structures with aluminum wire bonding, rated primarily at 1700 V and 3300 V. These were designed for direct replacement in existing ABB ACS 1000 and ACS 6000 medium-voltage drive platforms.

The second generation (2005–2012) introduced trench-gate IGBT cell technology, reducing on-state voltage drop (VCE(sat)) by approximately 15% and improving switching losses at frequencies above 500 Hz. This generation expanded the voltage range to 4500 V and 6500 V, targeting HVDC Light and SVC Plus applications. Thermal interface materials were upgraded from grease-based compounds to phase-change materials, improving long-term thermal resistance stability.

From 2013 onward, ABB transitioned to the HiPak2 platform for new designs, incorporating improved bond wire geometry and enhanced gate oxide reliability. Many 5SNG part numbers from this era are now in the mature or end-of-life phase. ABB has issued product change notices (PCNs) for several 3300 V and 4500 V variants, with recommended migration paths to the 5SNA (HiPak2) and 5SMX (press-pack) series. For plants still operating original 5SNG-based equipment, direct form-fit-function replacement remains the only viable maintenance strategy, as redesigning the power stack is not economically justified for installed base maintenance.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete 5SNG Parts

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for ABB 5SNG series modules that have been discontinued or placed on extended lead time by ABB Semiconductors. As ABB has progressively migrated its active product line to the 5SNA and 5SMX platforms, many 5SNG variants — particularly the 3300 V and 4500 V ratings — are no longer available through standard distribution channels.

DriveKNMS sources 5SNG modules through three primary channels: (1) factory-sealed new-old-stock (NOS) acquired from authorized surplus networks across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific; (2) certified refurbished units with full electrical re-test and documented pass/fail records; and (3) controlled decommissioning from retired industrial equipment, where complete drive stacks are acquired, tested, and disaggregated into individual certified spares. All units are stored in climate-controlled warehouses with ESD-compliant packaging. Traceability documentation — including date codes and original manufacturer test reports where available — is provided with each shipment. For plant operators facing unplanned downtime, DriveKNMS offers emergency dispatch with same-day shipping from stocked items. For planned maintenance cycles, consignment stocking agreements are available to guarantee module availability over multi-year maintenance windows.

Quality Control for the 5SNG Range

ABB 5SNG modules incorporate a complex internal structure: dual IGBT chips with anti-parallel freewheeling diodes, a direct copper bonded (DCB) ceramic substrate, and a copper base plate with controlled flatness tolerance for thermal interface integrity. All incoming inventory at DriveKNMS is subject to the following test sequence:

1. Visual inspection: Gate terminal condition, base plate flatness (≤50 µm deviation), silicone gel integrity, and label verification against ABB date code format.
2. Static electrical test: VCE(sat) at rated IC, VGE(th) threshold voltage, and ICES leakage current at rated VCE.
3. Blocking voltage test: Applied at 100% of rated VCES for 60 seconds per IEC 60747-9 §8.3.
4. Gate oxide integrity check: VGES applied at ±20 V for 10 seconds to verify gate dielectric condition.
5. Thermal resistance verification: Rth(j-c) measured via transient thermal impedance method on sampled units.
6. Drive platform compatibility check: For modules intended for ACS 6000 or PCS 6000 platforms, gate driver interface impedance is verified against ABB drive-specific gate unit specifications.

Units failing any single test parameter are quarantined and not offered for sale. Test records are retained for a minimum of 7 years and are available to customers upon request.
