ABB ACS101 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The ABB ACS101 series is a line of single-phase input, three-phase output micro drives designed for fractional to low-kilowatt motor control applications. Deployed across light industrial environments, HVAC auxiliary systems, pump control panels, and OEM machinery, the ACS101 occupies the entry-level segment of ABB’s drive portfolio. Its compact DIN-rail-compatible form factor and simplified parameter structure made it a standard selection for panel builders and OEM integrators throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The series is rated for 200–240 V single-phase input and supports output power ratings from 0.18 kW to 2.2 kW, covering the majority of small induction motor applications in light manufacturing, water treatment auxiliaries, and building automation subsystems.

The Evolution of ACS101 Architecture

The ACS101 was introduced as a successor to earlier ABB micro drive concepts, consolidating single-phase input capability into a sealed, compact enclosure without the need for external EMC filters in standard installations. Its architecture is based on a fixed V/Hz control topology — no vector control, no encoder feedback — making it suitable strictly for applications where precise speed regulation is not required. The drive communicates via a basic analog reference input (0–10 V or 4–20 mA) and digital I/O, with no fieldbus option natively supported.

As ABB’s drive portfolio evolved, the ACS101 was progressively superseded by the ACS150 and later the ACS310 and ACS355 series, which introduced scalar and vector control modes, Modbus RTU support, and broader power ranges. The ACS101 series has entered end-of-life status; ABB no longer manufactures new units, and spare parts availability through authorized channels is limited. For installations still running ACS101 drives, lifecycle extension through certified refurbished units and compatible replacement sourcing is the primary maintenance strategy.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete ACS101 Parts

The ACS101 series has been discontinued by ABB. New production units are no longer available through ABB’s authorized distribution network. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested, refurbished, and new-old-stock (NOS) ACS101 units sourced from decommissioned panels, OEM overstock, and controlled secondary market channels. All units are inspected prior to listing. For end-users operating legacy machinery with ACS101 drives embedded in fixed panel configurations — where a form-factor replacement is required rather than a functional equivalent — DriveKNMS provides direct unit matching by part number. Cross-reference to ACS150 or ACS310 equivalents is available on request for customers open to retrofit options. Lead times for specific low-power variants (H18, H37) are typically shorter than for higher-power models (K22) due to relative market availability.

Quality Control for the ACS101 Range

Each ACS101 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional test protocol prior to dispatch. The procedure includes: visual inspection of the power board, gate driver board, and control board for physical damage, corrosion, or capacitor degradation; DC bus capacitance measurement to assess electrolytic capacitor health relative to rated values; no-load power-up test to verify control board initialization and parameter access; loaded output test at rated current using a resistive or inductive load bank to confirm V/Hz output linearity across the speed range; and thermal imaging of the IGBT module and rectifier bridge under load to identify hotspot anomalies. Units with conformal coating variants (-C suffix) are additionally inspected under UV light to verify coating integrity on the PCB surface. Test records are retained per unit serial number.
