The Evolution of ACS880 Architecture

The ACS880 platform was introduced in 2013 as the successor to the ACS800 series, consolidating ABB's industrial drive lineup under a unified firmware and hardware architecture. Early ACS880 units (2013–2016) used the RDCU-02C control board and AINT-02C inverter interface. From 2017 onward, ABB transitioned to the RDCU-12C and introduced the Primary Control Program (PCP) firmware, enabling IEC 61131-3 application programming directly on the drive. The ACS880-04 cabinet module variant was introduced to address multi-drive bus architectures, sharing a common DC bus with ACS880-104 and ACS880-204 regenerative supply units. Compatibility considerations: ACS880-04 units require matching firmware versions between the drive module and the control panel (ACS-AP-I or ACS-AP-W). Mixing firmware generations (e.g., PCP 2.x with legacy RDCU-02C hardware) is not supported. The series remains in active production as of 2026, with long-term spare parts availability confirmed through ABB's lifecycle policy.
