Technical Dossier
The ABB Advant Controller 400 (AC 400), marketed under the Master series umbrella, is one of ABB's most widely deployed distributed control system (DCS) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore oil & gas platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale water treatment facilities, the AC 400 architecture established ABB's dominance in process automation from the late 1980s through the 2000s. Its modular backplane design, deterministic scan cycle, and support for PROFIBUS, MODBUS, and proprietary MasterBus 300 fieldbus protocols made it the reference platform for continuous process control in facilities requiring high availability and long operational lifecycles. The CI543 3BSE010699R1 is a communication interface module within this ecosystem, providing structured fieldbus connectivity between the AC 400 controller rack and external I/O networks.
The Advant Controller 400 platform was introduced by ABB in the late 1980s as a successor to the ASEA Master series controllers. The architecture evolved through three distinct generations. The first generation (circa 1988–1994) relied on the MasterBus 300 proprietary fieldbus and used parallel backplane communication with dedicated processor modules such as the PM511 and PM510. The second generation (1994–2002) introduced PROFIBUS DP support via communication interface modules including the CI543 and CI544 families, enabling integration with third-party I/O and drives without proprietary cabling. The third generation (2002–2010) added Ethernet-based supervisory connectivity and introduced the AC 800M as the designated migration target, while the AC 400 hardware continued in active production support.
As of 2026, the entire Advant AC 400 / Master series has entered end-of-life status. ABB officially discontinued active manufacturing of most AC 400 modules, with the AC 800M (800xA platform) designated as the replacement architecture. However, the installed base remains substantial — many facilities operate on 20–30 year maintenance cycles and cannot justify full DCS migration. DriveKNMS specializes in sourcing, testing, and supplying genuine and compatible AC 400 modules to support these long-term maintenance requirements.

Power Supply Modules
AC 400 modules present specific testing challenges due to their proprietary MasterBus 300 and PROFIBUS backplane communication protocols. Standard bench power-on testing is insufficient to verify communication interface functionality. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol for all AC 400 modules:
