Technical Dossier
The CI810 series was introduced as part of ABB's AC800M platform, which succeeded the earlier Advant OCS and MOD 300 control systems in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The original CI810 (non-suffixed) provided single-channel Profibus DP-V0 connectivity at up to 12 Mbit/s. The CI810V1 revision introduced enhanced diagnostic capabilities, support for Profibus DP-V1 acyclic services, and improved EMC compliance, making it compatible with a broader range of intelligent field devices requiring parameterization over the bus.
The CI810B variant followed with further firmware improvements and extended temperature tolerance for harsh environment installations. All variants share the same physical form factor and backplane connector, allowing direct substitution within existing AC800M racks without mechanical modification. The series interfaces with the AC800M CPU modules (PM851, PM856, PM860, PM861, PM864, PM866) via the internal CEX-Bus backplane. Compatibility with the S800 I/O system is achieved through the TB820 Profibus DP slave adapter, which connects S800 I/O modules to the CI810 master port. As the AC800M platform has entered its mature/sustaining lifecycle phase, the CI810 series is no longer in active development; ABB's current strategic direction points toward the AC800M successor platforms and OPC UA-based connectivity. Long-term maintenance support for CI810 modules is therefore a critical operational requirement for end users with extended plant lifecycles.
