ABB DCS800 Series Technical Notes

The ABB DCS800 series represents ABB's fourth-generation fully digital DC drive platform, engineered for demanding continuous-duty applications in heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, steel rolling lines, and offshore platforms, the DCS800 has accumulated a global installed base exceeding several hundred thousand units. Its architecture supports armature current ratings from 25 A to 5200 A and supply voltages from 230 V AC to 525 V AC (three-phase), making it one of the widest-range DC drive families in industrial automation history. The DCS800 replaced the earlier DCS500 and Mentor II platforms and remains the reference design for retrofit projects where AC conversion is not feasible due to existing DC motor infrastructure, process inertia constraints, or capital expenditure limitations.
