ABB AC500 Series Technical Notes

The ABB AC500 is a modular programmable logic controller platform deployed across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical processing, nuclear power generation, offshore oil & gas, pulp and paper, and water treatment infrastructure. Introduced in the early 2000s as a successor to the ABB Advant and 07KT series, the AC500 established itself as ABB's primary mid-to-high-range PLC platform for process automation and discrete manufacturing. Its distributed I/O architecture, IEC 61131-3 compliance, and broad communication protocol support have made it a standard specification in engineering procurement documents globally. The platform supports CPU modules ranging from compact entry-level controllers to high-availability redundant configurations, with I/O expansion via the S500 local bus and field-level communication via PROFIBUS, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and CANopen.
