ABB DSMB Series Technical Notes

The ABB DSMB series is a family of backplane, power supply, and bus interface modules developed for ABB's Advant OCS / Master distributed control system (DCS) platform. Deployed extensively across global heavy industry — including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, and offshore oil and gas platforms — the DSMB series forms the physical and electrical backbone of the Advant Master controller rack architecture. These modules provide regulated DC power distribution, backplane bus arbitration, and inter-module communication infrastructure. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of racks worldwide, with many sites operating continuous processes that preclude full system replacement, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational requirement.

The Evolution of DSMB Architecture

The DSMB series was introduced alongside the Advant Master (AM) platform in the mid-1980s as ABB (then Asea Brown Boveri) standardized its DCS rack infrastructure. Early revisions — including the DSMB-01 and DSMB-01A — established the 24 VDC backplane power distribution topology and the S100 I/O bus physical layer. The DSMB-01B introduced improved EMC filtering and revised connector locking mechanisms to address field reliability issues in high-vibration environments. The DSMB-01C, the most widely deployed revision, incorporated enhanced overcurrent protection circuitry and revised PCB layout for improved thermal performance under continuous industrial duty cycles.

As the Advant Master platform transitioned through its lifecycle — from AM2000 to AM2003 controller generations — the DSMB series maintained backward compatibility at the rack level, allowing incremental hardware upgrades without full rack replacement. ABB formally announced end-of-production for the DSMB series as part of the broader Advant OCS discontinuation, with last-time-buy windows closing in the early 2010s. Sites running Advant Master systems are now in extended lifecycle operation, dependent on the secondary market and specialist distributors for hardware continuity. Migration paths to ABB System 800xA or ABB Ability™ Symphony Plus exist but require full engineering projects; many operators defer migration due to cost and process risk, sustaining demand for original DSMB hardware.

DSMB Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified components within the ABB DSMB and closely associated Advant Master rack infrastructure series. Each entry reflects a distinct hardware function within the rack assembly.

Power Supply & Backplane Modules

  • DSMB-01C: Backplane power supply board, 24 VDC regulated output, overcurrent protection, S100 bus support — primary rack power distribution module, most current production revision.
  • DSMB-01B: Backplane power supply board, earlier revision with revised EMC filtering; functionally equivalent to DSMB-01C, compatible with same rack slots.
  • DSMB-01A: Original production backplane power supply; lacks enhanced overcurrent protection of later revisions; suitable for low-criticality replacement applications.
  • DSMB-01: First-generation backplane power supply; earliest hardware revision; limited field availability.
  • DSMC-01: Master controller module for Advant Master AM2000/AM2003; CPU and memory subsystem; interfaces directly with DSMB backplane bus.
  • DSMC-02: Enhanced master controller module; expanded memory capacity; compatible with DSMB-series rack infrastructure.

I/O Modules (S100 Bus)

  • DSDI-45: Digital input module, 32-channel, 24 VDC; mounts in DSMB-equipped rack; used for discrete process signal acquisition.
  • DSDI-110: Digital input module, 16-channel, 110 VAC; high-voltage discrete input for field device interfacing.
  • DSDO-45: Digital output module, 32-channel, 24 VDC; relay-driven discrete output for actuator and solenoid control.
  • DSAI-130: Analog input module, 16-channel, 4–20 mA / 0–10 V; process variable acquisition for flow, pressure, temperature transmitters.
  • DSAI-155: Analog input module with HART protocol support; 8-channel; enables smart transmitter diagnostics over existing 4–20 mA wiring.
  • DSAO-120: Analog output module, 8-channel, 4–20 mA; control signal generation for I/P converters and variable speed drives.
  • DSDP-150: Pulse input module; frequency and pulse counting for turbine flow meters and encoder feedback.

Communication & Bus Adapter Modules

  • DSCS-140: Serial communication module; RS-232/RS-485 interface; used for third-party device integration and legacy HMI connectivity.
  • DSCB-01: Communication bus adapter; bridges S100 I/O bus to external fieldbus segments; used in multi-rack Advant Master configurations.
  • DSQC-236: Axis computer module (robotics/motion variant); included in extended Advant family for coordinated motion control applications.
  • DSTC-170: Thermocouple input module; 8-channel; direct thermocouple connection with cold-junction compensation; used in high-temperature process monitoring.

Quality Control for the DSMB Range

DSMB-series modules present specific test challenges due to their role as the primary power distribution and bus arbitration layer within the Advant Master rack. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all DSMB units prior to dispatch:

  • Input voltage range verification: Modules are tested across the specified AC input range to confirm regulation performance and dropout behavior.
  • Output voltage accuracy: 24 VDC backplane output is measured under no-load, half-load, and full-load conditions against ABB specification tolerances.
  • Overcurrent protection test: Load is incrementally increased beyond rated output to verify protection circuit activation and recovery behavior.
  • S100 bus signal integrity: Backplane bus lines are probed for signal timing, impedance, and noise margin compliance using a reference rack assembly.
  • Thermal cycling: Units are subjected to operational temperature cycling to identify latent solder joint or capacitor failures not detectable under static test conditions.
  • Visual and mechanical inspection: PCB, connector pins, and housing are inspected for corrosion, mechanical damage, and counterfeit indicators prior to electrical testing.
