The ABB DSQC (Drive System Quality Control) series constitutes the core electronics platform for ABB's IRB industrial robot controllers, spanning the S3, S4, S4C, S4C+, and IRC5 controller generations. The DSQC designation was introduced with the S3 controller platform in the mid-1980s, initially covering analog servo drive boards and basic I/O interface cards. The S4 generation (introduced circa 1994) expanded the DSQC catalog significantly, introducing dedicated CPU boards, fieldbus adapter modules, and modular I/O racks. The S4C and S4C+ revisions (1998–2004) refined the backplane bus architecture and introduced higher-density I/O modules. The IRC5 controller (2004–present) retained the DSQC naming convention while migrating to a distributed motion control architecture with SERCOS and EtherNet/IP communication layers.
Compatibility between generations is limited: S4 and S4C modules share partial backplane compatibility, but S3 and IRC5 modules are architecturally incompatible with earlier generations. Engineers sourcing replacement parts must verify the exact controller generation and software revision before substitution. ABB has formally discontinued support for S3 and S4 generation hardware; S4C reached end-of-service in most regions by 2020.
