ABB's fieldbus adapter strategy for AC drives has followed a modular slot-based architecture since the ACS600 generation in the mid-1990s. Early fieldbus integration relied on proprietary protocols (DDCS, RDCO) and serial fieldbuses (PROFIBUS-DP via FPBA-01, DeviceNet via FDNA-01, Modbus RTU via FMBA-01). The transition to industrial Ethernet began with the introduction of PROFINET adapters (FPNO series) and EtherNet/IP adapters (FENA series) in the 2000s, targeting high-throughput, non-deterministic applications. Ethernet POWERLINK was introduced as a deterministic alternative for motion-critical and synchronized drive applications, resulting in the FEPL-01 (first generation, limited drive compatibility) and the current FEPL-02 (second generation, extended drive family support including ACS880). The FEPL-02 supports both Controlled Node (CN) and Managing Node (MN) roles within an EPL network, a capability absent in the FEPL-01. As ABB transitions its drive portfolio toward the ACS880 and ACQ580 platforms, the FEPL-02 remains the sole supported EPL adapter, with no announced successor as of 2026. This positions the FEPL-02 in a mature-but-active lifecycle phase, with long-term spare parts demand driven by the large installed base of ACS800 and ACS355 drives in continuous-process industries.
