Technical Dossier
The ABB GD9924 series comprises Digital Input (DI) modules deployed within the ABB Advant Controller (AC) and Master Bus (MB) distributed control system architecture. These modules are installed across critical process industries including petroleum refining, chemical manufacturing, nuclear power generation, and pulp and paper production. The GD9924 family interfaces field-level binary signals — valve position feedback, motor run status, limit switches, and interlock signals — into the Advant DCS backplane via the MB300 or S100 I/O bus. Installed base spans facilities commissioned from the late 1980s through the 2000s, with many sites still operating original hardware under long-term maintenance contracts.
The GD9924 module line was introduced as part of ABB's Advant OCS (Open Control System) platform, which succeeded the earlier ASEA MASTER system. Early revisions (R0001) operated on 24 VDC field input voltage with optocoupler isolation rated at 500 V. Subsequent revisions (R0002, R0003) introduced improved EMC filtering, extended operating temperature tolerance, and enhanced diagnostics accessible via the Advant Fieldbus (AF100) or PROFIBUS-DP gateway configurations.
The GD9924 series is classified as mature/end-of-life by ABB. New installations are directed toward the ABB System 800xA with S800 I/O or AC500 PLC platforms. However, the installed base of Advant-based systems remains substantial, and direct hardware replacement is the preferred maintenance strategy for sites where a full DCS migration is not economically viable. DriveKNMS maintains stock of both current-revision and legacy-revision GD9924 modules to support this installed base.
Digital Input Modules (DI)
Related Advant DI / DO / AI / AO Modules (GD-Series, same backplane family)
ABB has formally discontinued production of the GD9924 series. Replacement modules are no longer available through standard ABB distribution channels. DriveKNMS operates a dedicated obsolete parts inventory program for Advant DCS hardware. Stock is sourced from decommissioned plant equipment, verified against ABB revision documentation, and held in climate-controlled storage to prevent electrostatic and humidity damage.
For sites requiring multiple units — common in refinery turnaround projects or nuclear outage windows — DriveKNMS can provide batch quantities with matched revision levels to ensure backplane compatibility. Emergency same-day dispatch is available for critical process shutdowns. All units are supplied with test reports and revision identification documentation.
Each GD9924 module processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured verification protocol before dispatch:
