Technical Dossier
ABB's IMMFP (I/O Module Master Field Processor) architecture was introduced as part of the Advant OCS (Open Control System) platform in the late 1980s, succeeding the earlier MOD 300 and PROCONTIC systems. The AC450 controller, which hosts IMMFP I/O modules, operates on a proprietary MasterBus 300 fieldbus protocol, providing deterministic communication between the controller and distributed I/O stations. Early IMMFP generations (Rev A/B) supported basic analog and digital I/O with 12-bit resolution. Subsequent revisions introduced 16-bit analog resolution, enhanced diagnostics, and expanded servo control capability — culminating in specialized modules such as the IMHSS03 for hydraulic servo positioning loops.
Compatibility across IMMFP generations is constrained by backplane slot addressing and firmware revision alignment. Modules from different hardware revisions may require firmware parameter re-mapping when substituted. The AC450 platform reached end-of-active-development around 2005, transitioning to ABB's System 800xA as the strategic successor. However, the IMMFP installed base remains extensive, and ABB's long-term parts support program (LTPS) provides limited OEM availability. Third-party MRO suppliers such as DriveKNMS fill the gap for obsolete and hard-to-source IMMFP modules, including the IMHSS03.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked modules within the ABB IMMFP / AC450 ecosystem. Each module is classified by functional category.
Hydraulic & Servo Control
Analog Input Modules (AI)
Analog Output Modules (AO)
Digital Input Modules (DI)
Digital Output Modules (DO)
CPU / Controller Modules
Communication & Network Adapters
Power Supply Modules
All IMMFP modules processed by DriveKNMS undergo a structured multi-stage inspection protocol calibrated to the specific electrical and communication characteristics of the AC450 backplane architecture. Incoming inspection includes visual examination for backplane connector pin integrity, capacitor condition, and conformal coating status. Functional testing is performed using dedicated AC450 test racks with live MasterBus 300 communication, verifying module address recognition, I/O channel accuracy, and diagnostic register response. For servo modules including the IMHSS03, servo loop closure testing is performed with calibrated LVDT signal simulation to verify command output linearity across the full ±10V range and feedback input accuracy within ±0.1% full scale. Modules that pass all test stages are issued a DriveKNMS test certificate with channel-level data and are shipped with ESD-protective packaging and anti-static foam inserts.
