ABB NIB Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of NIB Series Architecture

The NIB series emerged alongside ABB's transition from the S4 to S4C+ robot controller platform in the late 1990s. Early-generation NIB boards (NIB-01) used parallel bus communication and were tightly coupled to the M97A/M98A motion computer hardware. The NIB-02 introduced a more modular backplane interface, improved electrostatic high-voltage control logic, and enhanced diagnostics via the IRC5 teach pendant. With the rollout of the IRC5 controller (circa 2004–2006), NIB-02 became the standard spraying node, replacing NIB-01 in new installations while maintaining backward compatibility in mixed S4C+/IRC5 hybrid cells.

By the mid-2010s, ABB introduced the DSQC series of process interface boards as part of the IRC5 Compact and OmniCore platforms, gradually superseding NIB-02 in new robot orders. However, the NIB-02 remains the active spare part for the large installed base of IRC5 M2004 and S4C+ controllers that will remain in service through the 2030s. Compatibility issues arise primarily when mixing firmware revisions: NIB-02 boards require RobotWare 5.x or 6.x and are not natively compatible with OmniCore's RobotWare 7.x without a gateway adapter.

NIB Series Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent the verified NIB and associated spraying interface module range for ABB IRC5 and S4C+ platforms. Each entry reflects a distinct functional role within the spraying cell architecture.

NIB-02 (3HNA024203-001/01): Primary node interface board for IRC5 spraying controller; manages atomizer, paint flow, and HV electrostatics.
NIB-02 (3HNA007026-001): Variant assembly of NIB-02 with alternate connector harness configuration for S4C+ backplane integration.
NIB-02 (3HNA007022-001): Sub-assembly board paired with NIB-02 main board; handles analog signal conditioning for spray process feedback.
NIB-01 (3HNA003931-001): First-generation node interface board for S4/S4C platforms; predecessor to NIB-02; parallel bus architecture.
NIB-03 (3HNA028971-001): Enhanced NIB variant with extended I/O capacity for multi-gun spray applications.
DSQC 662 (3HAC026254-001): IRC5 process interface board; successor platform to NIB-02 in new IRC5 installations post-2012.
DSQC 663 (3HAC031670-001): Dual-channel process I/O board; used alongside DSQC 662 in high-density spray cells.
DSQC 352 (3HAC17484-1): Analog I/O board for S4C+ controller; interfaces with NIB-02 for process signal routing.
DSQC 354 (3HAC4167-1): Digital I/O board; provides discrete signal interface between NIB-02 and spray gun solenoids.
DSQC 509 (3HAC14265-1): Serial measurement board for IRC5; used in conjunction with NIB-02 for encoder feedback in rotary atomizers.
DSQC 532 (3HAC025097-001): Fieldbus adapter board; enables DeviceNet communication between NIB-02 and plant-level DCS.
DSQC 679 (3HAC028357-001): IRC5 teach pendant interface board; indirectly supports NIB-02 parameter configuration via FlexPendant.
3HNA006149-001: NIB-02 replacement cable harness assembly; connects NIB-02 to IRC5 drive module backplane.
3HNA013747-001: High-voltage output module for electrostatic spray gun; controlled directly by NIB-02 HV logic.
3HNA015921-001: Atomizer speed control card; plug-in sub-module for NIB-02 rotary atomizer speed regulation.
3HNA019829-001: Paint flow control valve interface card; analog output sub-board for NIB-02 paint metering.
3HNA022684-001: Shaping air pressure control module; interfaces with NIB-02 for pneumatic spray pattern adjustment.

Quality Control for the NIB Series Range

NIB-02 boards present specific test challenges due to their integrated high-voltage electrostatic control circuitry, multi-channel analog outputs, and backplane bus communication logic. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol for each NIB-02 unit:
