Technical Dossier
The ABB Freelance DCS platform is one of the most widely deployed distributed control systems in global heavy industry. The NPCI series — I/O bus power supply and communication interface modules — forms the backbone of Freelance 800F and AC700F controller stations. These modules are installed across chemical processing plants, oil refineries, nuclear power facilities, pulp and paper mills, and offshore platforms worldwide.
The NPCI03 functions as the I/O bus power supply module, delivering regulated 24 VDC to the I/O station backplane and ensuring stable communication between field devices and the central controller. Its compact DIN-rail form factor and passive backplane integration make it a critical single-point-of-failure component in any Freelance DCS station — meaning sourcing a verified replacement unit is a high-priority maintenance task.
ABB's Freelance DCS lineage traces to the early 1990s Advant OCS platform, which used the Master Bus 300 (MB300) fieldbus architecture. The transition to the Freelance 800F generation in the early 2000s introduced PROFIBUS DP-based I/O station architecture, where NPCI-series modules replaced earlier DSAI/DSAO analog I/O power interfaces. The NPCI03 was introduced as part of this second-generation architecture, designed to supply 24 VDC to the I/O station bus with integrated short-circuit protection and diagnostic LED indication.
With the release of the AC700F and AC900F controllers (2010s), ABB maintained backward compatibility with the NPCI station hardware, extending the operational lifespan of existing NPCI03 installations. As of 2020, ABB has formally classified the Freelance 800F hardware — including the NPCI03 — as a mature/end-of-active-development product. Customers are advised to migrate to the AC700F or Freelance+ platform for new projects, while existing installations require third-party lifecycle support for spare parts procurement.
The following SKUs represent verified components within the ABB Freelance DCS I/O station and controller ecosystem. All models are confirmed hardware within the Freelance 800F / AC700F platform.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of ABB Freelance DCS components, including the NPCI03, NPCI02, NPCI01, and related I/O station modules. As ABB has transitioned active development away from the Freelance 800F hardware generation, OEM channel availability for these units has declined significantly. DriveKNMS sources verified surplus, refurbished, and new-old-stock (NOS) units through a global network of industrial automation distributors and decommissioned plant inventories.
For end-users operating Freelance DCS installations beyond their OEM support window, DriveKNMS provides: confirmed unit availability with lead-time quotation, functional test reports prior to shipment, and long-term consignment stocking agreements for high-volume maintenance contracts. Emergency same-day quotation is available for critical plant shutdown scenarios.
Each NPCI03 and associated Freelance DCS module processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured verification protocol before dispatch. Power supply modules are bench-tested under load conditions replicating a full 8-slot I/O station draw, with output voltage stability measured at ±1% tolerance across the operating temperature range (0–55°C). Backplane connector integrity is inspected under 10× magnification for pin deformation, oxidation, and mechanical wear. Communication modules (NCOM01, NCOM02) are validated using a live PROFIBUS DP test bench with confirmed master/slave handshake and data throughput verification. All units are shipped with individual test records and a 12-month functional warranty.
