ABB NTU Series Technical Notes

The ABB NTU (Network Termination Unit) series is a family of field termination and signal conditioning modules designed for use within ABB's Advant Controller and MOD 300 Distributed Control System (DCS) platforms. These units serve as the physical interface layer between field instrumentation and the DCS I/O subsystem, providing signal isolation, relay output switching, and digital/analog termination functions. The NTU series is installed across critical heavy-industry sectors including petroleum refining, chemical processing, nuclear power generation, pulp and paper manufacturing, and offshore oil and gas platforms. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of nodes globally, with many facilities operating continuous processes that preclude system replacement without extended lifecycle support for legacy hardware.

The Evolution of NTU Series Architecture

The NTU series was introduced as part of ABB's Advant OCS (Open Control System) architecture in the late 1980s, designed to complement the AC 450 and AC 460 controller families and the MOD 300 process control system inherited from Taylor Instruments. Early NTU modules operated on a passive backplane with direct wiring to S800 and S900 I/O clusters. As the Advant platform matured through the 1990s, NTU variants were expanded to support digital output relay functions (the -E suffix denoting relay output with enhanced isolation), analog input termination, and HART-pass-through configurations.
