Technical Dossier
The REF542 PLUS succeeded the earlier REF542 relay, which was introduced in the late 1990s as part of ABB's transition from electromechanical to numerical protection technology. The original REF542 used a proprietary communication protocol and a fixed I/O structure. The REF542 PLUS generation introduced a modular plug-in I/O board architecture, allowing field-configurable expansion of digital inputs, digital outputs, and analog measurement channels without hardware redesign.
Key architectural milestones include the introduction of IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging support, enabling peer-to-peer protection signaling without hardwired intertripping. Later firmware revisions added enhanced disturbance recording (up to 10 fault records with pre- and post-fault waveform capture), improved HMI with a graphical LCD panel, and expanded motor protection functions including thermal overload modeling and start inhibit logic.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced modules within the REF542 PLUS platform. Each entry includes a concise functional description.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU31: Multifunctional MV feeder protection relay, standard I/O configuration, IEC 61850.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU11: Base feeder protection unit, reduced I/O, Modbus RTU communication.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU21: Feeder protection with extended DI/DO module, PROFIBUS DP interface.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU41: Motor protection variant, thermal overload and start inhibit functions.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU51: Transformer differential protection configuration, REF542 PLUS platform.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU61: Busbar protection module, check synchronism and voltage supervision.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU71: Arc flash detection variant with optical sensor input support.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU81: Generator protection configuration, loss-of-field and reverse power functions.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU91: Extended communication variant, dual Ethernet ports, IEC 61850 Ed.2.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU01: Standard feeder protection, analog output module, 4–20 mA measurement.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU32: High-impedance differential protection configuration, REF542 PLUS base.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU33: Capacitor bank protection variant, unbalance detection function.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU34: Feeder protection with RTD input module, thermal monitoring.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU35: Distance protection variant, impedance-based zone protection.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU36: Directional overcurrent protection, sensitive earth fault detection.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU37: Recloser control variant, auto-reclose and check synchronism logic.
REF542 PLUS 76A3NDNN36ESU38: Voltage protection module, over/undervoltage and frequency supervision.
The REF542 PLUS platform uses a proprietary backplane bus for communication between the main CPU board and plug-in I/O modules. Quality verification for this platform requires testing beyond standard power-on checks. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all REF542 PLUS units processed through its facility:
