Technical Dossier
The ABB REPL-02 is an Ethernet POWERLINK fieldbus adapter module designed for integration with ABB ACS and ACH series variable frequency drives (VFDs). Ethernet POWERLINK is a deterministic real-time protocol based on IEEE 802.3 Fast Ethernet, widely deployed in motion control and process automation systems across chemical plants, oil refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, and marine propulsion installations. The REPL-02 enables cyclic and acyclic data exchange between ABB drives and POWERLINK Managing Nodes (MN), supporting process data objects (PDO) and service data objects (SDO) in conformance with the CANopen application layer over Ethernet (EPL V2). Its compact form factor and DIN-rail-compatible slot mounting make it a standard fieldbus option in large-scale distributed drive architectures where deterministic cycle times below 1 ms are required.
ABB's fieldbus adapter ecosystem for industrial drives has evolved across three distinct generations. The first generation, introduced in the early 1990s alongside the ACS 600 platform, used proprietary slot-in modules with fixed protocol stacks and no firmware upgrade capability. These included early PROFIBUS (RPBA-01) and DeviceNet (RDNA-01) adapters with limited PDO mapping flexibility.
The second generation, concurrent with the ACS 800 and ACH 550 platforms (mid-1990s to mid-2000s), introduced standardized DDCS (Distributed Drives Communication System) backplane interfaces, allowing the same adapter slot to accept multiple protocol variants. Modules such as the RCAN-01 (CANopen), RLON-01 (LonWorks), and RMBA-01 (Modbus/RTU) were introduced during this period. Firmware became field-upgradeable via the drive's control panel or PC tools.
The third generation, aligned with the ACS 880 and ACQ 580 platforms (2010s onward), introduced Ethernet-based adapters including the REPL-02 (POWERLINK), RETA-02 (EtherNet/IP & Modbus/TCP), and RECA-01 (EtherCAT). These modules use a common hardware platform with protocol-specific firmware, support dual-port topologies for line and ring redundancy, and integrate with ABB's Drive Composer and Automation Builder engineering tools. The REPL-02 specifically targets POWERLINK networks managed by B&R Automation Studio or other EPL-compliant PLCs.
Compatibility note: REPL-02 is supported on ACS 355, ACS 550, ACS 580, ACS 800, ACS 880, ACH 550, and ACQ 580 platforms. It is not compatible with ACS 150 or ACS 310 due to the absence of a fieldbus adapter slot on those drives.

The REPL-02 is a current-production module as of 2026, but earlier-generation fieldbus adapters in the ABB drive ecosystem — including the RDNA-01, RCAN-01, RLON-01, RCNA-01, RIBA-01, and RCCA-01 — have reached end-of-life (EOL) status. ABB has formally discontinued spare parts production for several of these modules, with last-time-buy windows having closed between 2015 and 2022.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of legacy ABB fieldbus adapter modules sourced through authorized surplus channels, tested refurbishment programs, and long-term storage stock. For facilities operating ACS 600 or ACS 800 platforms with no planned migration to ACS 880, lifecycle extension support is available including: tested surplus units with 12-month warranty, firmware version matching to installed drive software revisions, and compatibility verification against specific drive hardware revision codes (e.g., ACS800-01-0016-3+E200 vs. +E205 hardware variants).
DriveKNMS does not substitute non-OEM or counterfeit modules. All units are verified against ABB part number databases and hardware revision documentation prior to dispatch.
ABB fieldbus adapter modules present specific test challenges due to their dual-interface architecture: the drive-side backplane connector (DDCS or slot-specific bus) and the network-side protocol stack must both be validated independently and in combination.
DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all REPL-02 and related adapter units:
