The Evolution of SDCS Architecture

The SDCS platform was introduced by ABB in the early 1990s as a modular successor to proprietary single-board DC drive controllers. The first-generation SDCS boards (circa 1992–1998) used parallel backplane communication with discrete analog signal conditioning. The second generation (1998–2006) introduced SDCS-CON-2 and SDCS-CON-4 controller boards with onboard DSP processing, enabling closed-loop current and speed regulation at higher bandwidths. The third generation integrated fieldbus adapters (SDCS-FEX, SDCS-AMC) and expanded I/O density via the SDCS-IOB range.

Quality Control for the SDCS Range

• Visual inspection: PCB examination for capacitor bulge, trace corrosion, solder joint fatigue, and connector pin damage — common failure modes in boards with 15+ years of service.
• Powered bench test: Each board is energized on a dedicated SDCS test rig replicating the original backplane voltage rails (±15 V, +5 V, +24 V) and communication bus signals.
• Functional verification: CON boards are tested for closed-loop speed regulation response; PIN boards are tested for gate pulse generation accuracy and isolation resistance to thyristor gate circuits.
• Firmware version check: Controller boards are verified for firmware revision compatibility with the customer's declared drive software version.
• Burn-in cycle: Boards are subjected to a minimum 4-hour thermal cycle at operating temperature before final inspection and packaging.
