Technical Dossier
The ABB SM1006S is a 6-channel videographic chart recorder belonging to ABB's Chartmaster and Truline recorder product family. It is deployed across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, chemical processing plants, and pulp & paper mills. The SM1006S replaces traditional circular and strip chart recorders with a paperless, TFT-color-display-based recording platform. Its installed base spans facilities in Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and North America, where regulatory compliance (FDA 21 CFR Part 11, NAMUR NE 43) and long-term data integrity are mandatory requirements. The unit supports up to 6 universal analog inputs, configurable for thermocouple, RTD, mV, V, and mA signals, making it a universal front-end for process variable logging in multi-loop control environments.
The SM1006S is part of ABB's second-generation paperless recorder platform, succeeding the earlier SM500F and SM1000 series. Early ABB videographic recorders (circa 1995–2005) relied on proprietary backplane communication buses and VGA-resolution monochrome displays. The SM1006S generation introduced a 5.7-inch TFT color display, USB data export, Ethernet TCP/IP connectivity, and Modbus RTU/TCP communication as standard or optional features depending on the variant suffix code.
The suffix structure of the SM1006S part number encodes the full hardware configuration: SM1006S / [Display] / [Input Config] / [Memory] / [Communication] / [Approval]. The variant SM1006S/B12/0000/32/STD decodes as: B12 = 5.7-inch color TFT display with 12-month internal memory capacity; 0000 = standard analog input configuration; 32 = 32 MB internal flash storage; STD = standard approval (non-ATEX, non-SIL). Later variants introduced ATEX Zone 2 certification (suffix /EX) and extended memory options up to 128 MB.
Compatibility note: SM1006S units use a dedicated ABB configuration software (Comms Tool / DataManager Pro). They are not backward-compatible with SM500F configuration files. Ethernet-equipped variants require firmware version 3.x or above for Modbus TCP operation. Units manufactured before 2010 may require a firmware upgrade kit (part: SM-FWUPG-KIT) for USB host functionality.
The following SKUs represent the documented SM1006S variant range. Each unit is a self-contained videographic recorder; functional differences are determined by display type, communication options, memory, and certification suffix.
The SM1006S series entered its end-of-active-production phase as ABB transitioned its recorder portfolio toward the ABB RVG200 and Yokogawa DX1000/DX2000-class platforms. However, the SM1006S remains in active service at thousands of installations globally due to the high cost of DCS-level recorder replacement projects. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of SM1006S units and sub-assemblies, including:
DriveKNMS sources SM1006S inventory through decommissioned plant asset recovery, authorized distributor overstock, and direct manufacturer surplus channels. All units are serialized and traceable. Lead time for standard variants: 3–7 business days. For ATEX-certified variants (/EX suffix), lead time is 7–14 business days subject to stock availability.
Each SM1006S unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional verification protocol prior to dispatch:
Test records are retained for 5 years and available upon request for regulated industries (pharmaceutical, nuclear, food & beverage).
