Technical Dossier
The ABB SPAS series represents a core family of I/O and signal processing modules deployed within ABB's Advant Controller (AC) and AC800M distributed control system (DCS) platforms. These modules are installed across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale chemical processing facilities. The SPAS designation covers analog signal handling modules — specifically analog input (AI) cards — that interface field instrumentation (4–20 mA transmitters, thermocouples, RTDs) with the controller backplane. Due to the long operational lifecycles typical of DCS infrastructure (15–30 years), SPAS series modules remain in active service at thousands of sites worldwide, making spare parts availability a critical operational concern for plant maintenance engineers and procurement teams.
The SPAS module family originated within ABB's Advant OCS (Open Control System) architecture, introduced in the late 1980s and refined through the 1990s. Early SPAS modules were designed for the Advant Controller 110 (AC110) and AC160 platforms, operating over the Advant Fieldbus (AF100) and MasterBus 300 communication infrastructure. These early-generation cards used parallel backplane communication and were not hot-swappable in all configurations.
With the transition to the AC800M platform (introduced circa 2000), ABB maintained backward compatibility for many SPAS I/O modules through the use of S800 I/O interface modules and TB820/TB840 termination units, allowing legacy SPAS cards to coexist with newer S800 I/O in hybrid DCS architectures. This compatibility layer extended the operational life of SPAS hardware significantly, but also introduced integration constraints — particularly around firmware versioning and ModuleBus addressing — that maintenance teams must account for during system upgrades.
By the 2010s, ABB formally transitioned new installations to the S800 I/O and S900 remote I/O families. The SPAS series entered its end-of-active-production phase, though ABB continued to supply spare parts through its service channels. As of 2026, the majority of SPAS modules are classified as obsolete or RFQ availability review by ABB, making third-party certified spare parts suppliers a primary sourcing channel for plant operators requiring like-for-like replacements.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly referenced modules within the ABB SPAS and closely associated Advant/AC800M I/O module families. Each module is listed with its primary functional classification and a concise technical descriptor.
