Technical Dossier
The AI-Tek 70082 series represents a standardized line of passive (magnetic pickup) speed sensors engineered for continuous-duty industrial speed measurement in heavy process industries. These sensors are deployed across chemical processing plants, petroleum refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, pulp and paper mills, and steel manufacturing operations where shaft speed, gear tooth count, and rotational frequency must be monitored with high reliability under extreme environmental conditions. The 70082 series operates on the variable-reluctance principle: a ferromagnetic target (gear tooth, keyway, or bolt head) passing the sensor tip generates a sinusoidal AC voltage proportional to rotational speed. No external power supply is required, making these units inherently fail-safe and suitable for hazardous area installations. The series has accumulated decades of installed base across OEM turbine control panels, compressor monitoring systems, and conveyor drive protection circuits globally.
AI-Tek Instruments (formerly known as Airpax / Electro Corporation) introduced the 70082 series as a successor to earlier variable-reluctance pickup families in the late 1980s. The core architecture centers on a threaded stainless steel housing (typically 3/4-16 UNF or M18x1.5 thread forms), an Alnico or ceramic permanent magnet pole piece, and a precision-wound copper coil assembly. Early variants used epoxy-potted two-wire flying leads; subsequent revisions introduced MIL-spec circular connector terminations (MS3106 series) and DIN 43650 connector options to address field-wiring standardization requirements in European process plants.
The 70082-1000-xxx sub-series designates the standard thread body with varying cable lengths and connector configurations. The 70082-2000-xxx sub-series introduced extended-range pole pieces for larger air-gap applications (up to 0.090 in / 2.3 mm). By the 2000s, AI-Tek consolidated the catalog under the Dynisco/Roper Technologies umbrella, and several 70082 variants transitioned to end-of-life status. Replacement cross-references include the AI-Tek T77xxx series and selected Bently Nevada 330xxx proximity transducer configurations for applications requiring active (powered) output signals. For legacy DCS and turbine control systems locked to passive sensor input cards, the 70082 series remains the only direct drop-in replacement.
