Technical Dossier
The Honeywell C300 Controller Series is the core process control platform of the Experion PKS (Process Knowledge System) distributed control system. Deployed across global heavy industries — including petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, and crude oil refineries — the C300 platform represents one of the most widely installed DCS architectures in continuous process environments. Its modular I/O architecture, based on the Series C I/O (SCIO) backplane, supports high-density analog and digital signal processing with deterministic scan rates. The C300 controller communicates over the FTE (Fault Tolerant Ethernet) network, providing redundant control paths without single points of failure. Installed base estimates exceed tens of thousands of nodes globally, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational concern for plant maintenance teams.
The C300 platform was introduced by Honeywell as the successor to the TDC 3000 and PlantScape systems, consolidating legacy HPM (High-Performance Manager) and ACE (Application Control Environment) functions into a unified Ethernet-based controller architecture. Early C300 deployments (circa 2004–2008) relied on IOTA (I/O Termination Assembly) boards paired with FIM (Field Interface Module) cards for signal conditioning. The introduction of the SCIO (Series C I/O) subsystem standardized the backplane interface, enabling hot-swap module replacement without process interruption.
Subsequent hardware revisions addressed EMI shielding, extended the operating temperature range, and improved HART pass-through capability on analog modules. The CC-PAON01 (Analog Output), CC-PAIN01 (Analog Input), and CC-PDIL01 (Digital Input) represent the mature-generation SCIO I/O modules, fully compatible with Experion PKS R400 through R520 software releases. As the C300 platform enters its extended lifecycle phase, Honeywell has transitioned new projects toward the Experion PKS Highly Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) architecture; however, the installed base of C300 hardware remains in active service and will require spare parts support through the 2030s.
