Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL Proximity Transducer System is one of the most widely deployed eddy-current measurement platforms in global heavy industry. It is installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and rotating machinery trains in steel mills and pulp-and-paper facilities. The system measures radial shaft vibration, axial position (thrust), and differential expansion on turbines, compressors, pumps, and gearboxes. Its 5 mm and 8 mm probe configurations cover shaft diameters from small auxiliary pumps to large steam turbine rotors. The 3300 XL series is API 670 compliant and is accepted by major machinery OEMs including GE, Siemens, MAN Energy Solutions, and Solar Turbines as the reference standard for continuous machinery protection.
Bently Nevada introduced the original 3300 series in the 1980s as a modular, rack-mounted proximity measurement system designed for integration with early DCS platforms. The first-generation 3300/05 and 3300/10 monitors used discrete analog circuitry and required manual calibration against specific probe-cable-driver combinations. In the mid-1990s, the 3300 XL designation was introduced to reflect enhanced electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), extended temperature range operation (−40 °C to +85 °C for field-mounted drivers), and standardized 3-wire output signaling compatible with EPROM-based safety systems.
The 3300 XL probe cables introduced a triaxial shielded construction to reduce common-mode noise in high-voltage switchgear environments. Extension cables were standardized at 5 m and 9 m increments to maintain system sensitivity within the −18 V DC to −24 V DC bias voltage window. The 330180 series drivers replaced earlier 3300/16 drivers with improved short-circuit protection and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 certification. By 2010, the 3300 XL system had entered a mature lifecycle phase; Bently Nevada (acquired by Baker Hughes in 2002) continued to manufacture replacement parts while directing new installations toward the System 1 / 3500 series platform. As of 2026, the 3300 XL remains in active spare-parts production for installed-base support, though no new architectural revisions are planned.
