The Bently Nevada 330103 series is a family of 3300 XL 8mm proximity probes manufactured by Baker Hughes (formerly GE Bently Nevada). These probes are integral components of the 3300 XL Proximity Transducer System, which is the de facto standard for continuous shaft vibration, position, and speed monitoring in rotating machinery across global heavy industry. Installed in petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and refinery compressor trains, the 330103 series provides the primary sensing element for eddy-current-based displacement measurement. The system operates on the Proximitor sensor principle: the probe tip generates a radio-frequency electromagnetic field; any conductive target (shaft) entering that field induces eddy currents, attenuating the field in proportion to the gap distance. This gap voltage is then conditioned by a paired Proximitor sensor (e.g., 330180 or 330185 series) into a DC voltage output readable by the plant DCS or machinery protection system (e.g., System 1, 3500 rack). The 330103 probe is rated for continuous operation in environments up to 177°C (350°F) and is compatible with standard 3300 XL extension cables and Proximitor sensors, making it a direct field-replaceable unit across thousands of legacy and active installations worldwide.
The 330103 series is the 8mm-diameter successor to the earlier 3300 5mm probe family (330101 series). Bently Nevada introduced the 3300 XL platform in the mid-1990s to address field reliability issues with earlier probe bodies, including connector corrosion and cable strain failures in high-vibration environments. The 330103 standardized on a stainless-steel armored body with an integral 5-meter or 9-meter armored extension cable, a 3/8-28 UNF thread for mounting, and a TNC connector interface to the Proximitor sensor.
Key architectural milestones: The original 330103 variants used a fixed-length integral cable design. Later revisions introduced the -02 and -05 cable-length suffixes to standardize field inventory. The -CN suffix designates probes manufactured or certified for the Chinese market, complying with relevant GB/T standards while maintaining full electrical interoperability with global 3300 XL Proximitor sensors. As the 3500 machinery protection platform became dominant post-2000, the 330103 series retained full compatibility as the sensing front-end, requiring no modification. The series is now in a mature/end-of-active-production lifecycle; Baker Hughes continues to supply replacement units, but the primary market is MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) and spare parts replenishment rather than new project specification. For installations where the 330103 is no longer available through OEM channels, the 330104 series (reverse-mount) and 330105 series (high-temperature) are the closest functional alternatives, though they require mechanical re-evaluation of the probe mount.
