Bently Nevada 330103 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 330103 series is a family of eddy-current proximity transducer systems engineered for continuous, non-contact measurement of shaft radial vibration, axial position, and differential expansion in rotating machinery. Deployed across global heavy industry — including petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, and crude oil refineries — the 330103 series forms the sensing front-end of Bently Nevada's 3300 XL machinery protection architecture. Its installation base spans tens of thousands of turbines, compressors, pumps, and gearboxes operating under API 670 machinery protection standards. The system operates on the eddy-current principle: a driver/extension cable pair energizes a probe tip, generating a radio-frequency electromagnetic field; conductive target material (typically shaft steel) attenuates this field proportionally to gap distance, producing a DC voltage output linear with displacement. The 330103 transducer system is rated for continuous operation in ambient temperatures from -35°C to +85°C and is compatible with hazardous area classifications including ATEX Zone 1 and FM Class I Division 1.

Quality Control for the 330103 Range

The 330103 proximity transducer system requires component-level functional verification prior to installation, as probe sensitivity drift, cable impedance degradation, and driver oscillator frequency shift each independently affect system accuracy. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 330103 units: (1) Probe tip impedance measurement at 1 MHz using a calibrated LCR meter, verified against Bently Nevada factory specification bands for 5mm and 8mm probe types. (2) Extension cable continuity and shield integrity test, including insulation resistance measurement at 500 VDC to detect moisture ingress in armored cable variants. (3) Driver output voltage linearity sweep: the driver is powered at -24 VDC and probe gap is varied from 0.25mm to 2.54mm in 0.25mm increments using a certified non-conductive gap tool and AISI 4140 steel target; output voltage is recorded at each step and compared against the nominal sensitivity curve of -7.87 V/mm ±10%. (4) System frequency response check at 10 kHz to confirm driver bandwidth meets 3300 XL platform requirements. (5) Final functional burn-in at operating temperature for 4 hours. Units failing any parameter are quarantined and not offered for sale.
