The Bently Nevada 330104 series represents one of the most widely deployed proximity probe product lines in global heavy industry. Manufactured under the Baker Hughes (formerly GE) Bently Nevada brand, the 330104 series is a component of the 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer System — a platform that has achieved dominant installed-base status in rotating machinery protection across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and large-scale chemical processing facilities.
The 330104 probe is a passive eddy-current sensor designed to measure radial shaft vibration, axial position (thrust), and differential expansion in turbomachinery including steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, and large induction motors. Its 8mm tip diameter and standardized cable/connector interface make it the default specification in most OEM turbomachinery packages built between 1995 and the present day. Global installed base estimates place the 3300 XL platform — of which the 330104 is the primary probe component — in excess of 200,000 measurement points worldwide.
The 330104 series is the successor to the earlier Bently Nevada 7200 series and 3300 5mm probe systems. The transition to the 3300 XL 8mm platform in the mid-1990s addressed key limitations of earlier designs: improved signal-to-noise ratio at high shaft speeds, extended temperature range for hot-section turbine applications, and a standardized 5-meter armored extension cable system that simplified field replacement without recalibration.
The 330104 probe operates in conjunction with the 330130 or 330180 extension cable and a dedicated proximitor/oscillator-demodulator (the 330180 or 3300 XL proximitor). This three-component architecture — probe, extension cable, proximitor — must be treated as a matched system. Substituting components from different series (e.g., pairing a 330104 probe with a 7200 series proximitor) will produce calibration errors and is not supported by Bently Nevada.
From a lifecycle perspective, the 330104 series entered its maturity phase circa 2010. The platform remains in active production and is supported by Baker Hughes, but the broader 3300 XL ecosystem has been supplemented by the 3500 series rack-based monitoring system for new installations requiring integrated machinery protection. For existing 3300 XL installations, the 330104 remains the correct replacement probe and is expected to remain available through at least 2035 based on current OEM support commitments.
