The Bently Nevada 330180 Series Proximitor Sensors represent one of the most widely deployed eddy-current proximity transducer system components in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and large-scale rotating machinery facilities, the 330180 Series functions as the signal conditioning interface between the 3300 XL proximity probe and the monitoring system. Its role is critical: it converts the raw oscillator signal from the probe into a DC voltage proportional to the gap between the probe tip and the observed shaft surface, providing real-time radial vibration, axial position, and differential expansion data to plant DCS and machinery protection systems.
The 330180 Series is engineered to operate with the Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm and 5mm probe systems, and is fully compatible with the 3500 Series machinery protection rack when used with appropriate interface modules. Installations of this series are documented in facilities operated by ExxonMobil, Shell, SABIC, Sinopec, and major nuclear utilities across Asia, Europe, and North America. The series has reached mature lifecycle status; however, installed base volumes ensure continued demand for spare parts and maintenance-grade replacements well into the 2030s.
The 330180 Proximitor was introduced as part of Bently Nevada's 3300 XL transducer system, succeeding the earlier 3300 Series (non-XL) which used a different cable impedance standard and was not directly interchangeable. The 3300 XL system standardized on a 5-meter, 9-meter, and 15-meter extension cable architecture, with the Proximitor acting as the termination and conditioning unit mounted in the field junction box or directly at the machinery skid.
Early 330180 variants used a fixed supply voltage of -24 VDC and produced an output range of -2 VDC to -18 VDC. Subsequent MOD revisions (notably MOD:163339-01 and MOD:163339-02) introduced improved EMI shielding, revised internal oscillator circuits for tighter frequency stability, and enhanced temperature compensation for operation in high-ambient environments up to 121°C (250°F). The transition from MOD:163339-01 to later revisions did not alter the electrical interface, preserving backward compatibility with existing 3500/40M and 3500/42M monitor cards.
As the 3300 XL system has entered end-of-life status with Bently Nevada (now a Baker Hughes company), the 330180 Series is no longer in active production. Replacement strategy for new installations typically involves migration to the Bently Nevada 3500 Series with integrated Proximitor functionality (3500/40M, 3500/42M, 3500/44M). For existing 3300 XL installations, the 330180 remains the only field-replaceable conditioning unit without a full system retrofit.
