Bently Nevada 3300 XL Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 XL Proximity Transducer System is one of the most widely deployed eddy-current-based vibration monitoring platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and crude oil refineries, the 3300 XL series functions as the primary machinery protection layer for rotating equipment including steam turbines, gas compressors, centrifugal pumps, and gearboxes. Its architecture conforms to API 670 (Machinery Protection Systems) and integrates directly with Bently Nevada's System 1 and 3500 series condition monitoring frameworks. The 3300 XL line replaced the legacy 3300 series and introduced improved signal conditioning, extended cable drive capability, and tighter temperature compensation tolerances — making it the de facto standard for critical machinery monitoring in facilities built or upgraded between 1995 and the present.

The Evolution of 3300 XL Architecture

The Bently Nevada 3300 series was introduced in the late 1980s as a modular eddy-current proximity transducer system designed for continuous shaft vibration, position, and speed measurement. The original 3300 platform used analog signal conditioning with discrete component circuitry and was limited in cable drive length and temperature range.

The 3300 XL revision, released in the mid-1990s, introduced hybrid integrated circuitry, extended the operating temperature range to -35°C to +85°C (driver/monitor), and increased the cable drive capability to support installations with long field cable runs common in large refinery and power generation layouts. The 3300 XL probe tip diameter standardized at 5 mm and 8 mm, with gap voltage operating at -10 VDC nominal into a 200 Ω load.

Compatibility note: 3300 XL probes, extension cables, and drivers are not interchangeable with the earlier 3300 series components without recalibration. The 3300 XL system uses a dedicated scale factor of 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil), and mixing legacy 3300 components introduces measurement error. As the 3300 XL series has entered its mature/end-of-life phase, Baker Hughes (the current owner of Bently Nevada) has transitioned new installations toward the 3500 series rack-based system. However, the installed base of 3300 XL systems in operating plants remains substantial, and long-term maintenance support for these components is a critical operational requirement for asset owners.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete 3300 XL Parts

Q: How are RFQ terms confirmed?
A: Quantity, required condition, documentation needs, destination and sourcing route are confirmed during RFQ review before quotation.

Q: Can you support multi-unit or repeat RFQ requests?
A: Yes. Send the model list, target quantity and destination so DRIVEKNMS can review sourcing options and quote the requirement as a project RFQ.

Quality Control for the 3300 XL Range

The 3300 XL proximity transducer system requires functional verification across the complete signal chain: probe tip, integral cable, extension cable, and proximitor/driver. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 3300 XL components prior to shipment:

Gap voltage linearity test: Each probe and driver pair is bench-tested across the full linear range (typically 0.25 mm to 2.25 mm for 8mm probes) using a calibrated target material (AISI 4140 steel) to verify the 200 mV/mil (7.87 V/mm) scale factor within ±1% tolerance.

Cable continuity and insulation resistance: All integral and extension cables are tested for conductor continuity and insulation resistance (>100 MΩ at 500 VDC) to detect micro-fractures or moisture ingress common in field-aged assemblies.

Driver output verification: Proximitor and driver units are powered at -24 VDC and output voltage is measured at nominal gap to confirm operating point and noise floor (<5 mV RMS broadband).
