Technical Dossier
The B&R Automation PC 620 (5PC600 series) is a panel-integrated industrial PC platform developed by Bernecker & Rainer Industrie-Elektronik GmbH (Austria). It is deployed across heavy-process industries including petrochemical refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, and continuous-process chemical plants. The platform integrates x86-based computing with B&R's APROL and Automation Studio environments, enabling deterministic real-time control alongside HMI visualization on a single hardware unit. Its fanless and compact variants are rated for 24/7 operation in environments with ambient temperatures up to 55°C and vibration loads consistent with IEC 60068-2-6. The 5PC600 line occupies a critical position in installed base management: thousands of units remain in active service at facilities where control system replacement carries multi-year capital expenditure cycles, making long-term spare parts availability a primary procurement concern.
The Automation PC 620 was introduced as a successor to B&R's earlier Panel PC 700 and Automation PC 810 platforms, consolidating HMI and control functions into a single DIN-rail or panel-mount enclosure. Early revisions (circa 2005–2010) used Intel Celeron M and Pentium M processors with 400 MHz FSB, paired with B&R's proprietary X2X Link backplane for I/O expansion. Mid-generation revisions introduced Intel Atom and Core 2 Duo CPUs, expanding RAM support to 4 GB DDR2 and adding USB 2.0 and dual Ethernet ports for POWERLINK and standard TCP/IP networks.
The following SKUs represent verified models within the B&R 5PC600 / Automation PC 620 platform, categorized by primary function:
Panel PC Main Units
Accessory & Expansion Modules (5AC600 compatible)
The 5PC600 platform presents specific verification challenges due to its integrated backplane architecture, where the CPU module, display controller, and I/O interface share a common bus. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 5PC600 units:
