Technical Dossier
The ACS580MV represents ABB's second-generation medium voltage drive architecture, succeeding the ACS5000 and ACS6000 platforms. Early ABB medium voltage drives (pre-2005) relied on GTO (Gate Turn-Off Thyristor) switching technology, which imposed significant maintenance burdens due to snubber circuit complexity and limited switching frequency. The transition to IGCT (Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor) technology in the ACS5000 series improved efficiency and reduced harmonic distortion. The ACS580MV introduced IGBT-based PEBB modules, enabling higher switching frequencies, improved output waveform quality, and a significantly reduced module footprint. The PEBB architecture decouples the power cell from the control infrastructure, allowing independent firmware updates and hardware replacement. Compatibility considerations are critical: ACS580MV PEBB modules are not interchangeable with ACS5000 or ACS6000 power cells due to differing bus voltage ratings, gate driver interfaces, and fiber-optic communication protocols. Control boards from the ACS580MV platform are similarly incompatible with predecessor series. Engineers managing mixed-generation fleets must maintain separate spare parts inventories for each platform generation.
The following SKUs represent verified components within the ABB ACS580MV medium voltage drive platform, organized by functional category:
Power Electronics Building Blocks (PEBB) – Core Power Switching Modules
Control Units – Drive Management and Regulation
Communication Adapters – Fieldbus and Network Integration
Power Supply Units – Internal Auxiliary Power
Gate Driver and Fiber-Optic Interface Boards
