Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL series represents one of the most widely deployed vibration monitoring platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, and refinery turbomachinery trains, the 3300 XL system provides continuous, real-time machinery protection for rotating equipment including steam turbines, gas compressors, centrifugal pumps, and large electric motors. Its eddy-current proximity measurement architecture delivers non-contact displacement sensing with sub-micron resolution, making it the reference standard for API 670-compliant machinery protection systems. The platform's modular rack-based design allows field-replaceable transducer chains — probe, extension cable, and proximitor — to be maintained independently without process shutdown, a critical operational requirement in continuous-process industries.
The 3300 XL series succeeded the earlier Bently Nevada 3300 standard series, introducing an extended-range eddy-current driver circuit that improved linearity across a wider gap range and reduced sensitivity to target material variations. The original 3300 series (non-XL) used a 5 mm nominal gap with a ±1 mm linear range; the 3300 XL expanded this to support 8 mm probes (330101 family) and 11 mm probes (330103 family), accommodating larger shaft diameters and heavier bearing clearances common in utility-scale turbomachinery.
The 3300 XL proximitor/extension cable system introduced a standardized connector interface (the Bently Nevada 3-pin MIL-spec connector) that remains backward-compatible with legacy 3300 installations, provided the correct driver card is matched to the probe tip diameter. The system operates on a –24 VDC supply rail, with output voltage ranging from –2 VDC (near gap) to –18 VDC (far gap), a convention maintained across all 3300 XL variants to ensure interchangeability within a rack system.
By the mid-2000s, Bently Nevada (acquired by GE in 2002, subsequently integrated into Baker Hughes in 2017) introduced the System 1 software platform as the digital overlay for 3300 XL hardware, enabling condition monitoring analytics without replacing field-installed transducer chains. This software-hardware separation extended the operational life of 3300 XL installations well into the 2020s. Many sites running 3300 XL hardware have migrated monitoring software to System 1 Evolution while retaining original probe and proximitor assemblies, making long-term spare parts availability a primary maintenance concern.
Proximity Probes — 8 mm Tip Diameter (330101 Family)
Proximity Probes — 11 mm Tip Diameter (330103 Family)
Extension Cables (330130 Family)
Proximitor Sensors / Signal Conditioners (330180 / 330185 Family)
Rack-Mount Monitor Cards (3300 Series)
The 3300 XL transducer chain — probe tip, armored integral cable, extension cable, and proximitor — must be tested as a matched system, not as individual components. DriveKNMS applies the following verification protocol to all 3300 XL units:
